The most misrepresented element of inspiration is the notion that it has to come from the real world.

10. 6 ways
To grow STEM
In an Elementary Library
The SCIENTIFIC Hypothesis used to
Develop this Presentation
Booktalking books makes them more popular.
Actions speak louder than words
Therefore:
If we can find active ways to “sell” books Everyone wins
Parallel (corollary) theory:
Learning is not a quiet passive process.
Thinking may be a quiet, passive process but learning is a loud interactive and
often messy.
Developed by a guy that knows
NOTHING about hypotheisises
He failed most of the science classes
This is the part library types call the Prologue
Target Audience
.
The Techy, nerdy introspective DIY-ers that hang out waiting for you to actually start that maker-space you have been talking about since first grade.
For all those children that are not really into books.
For all those children that are really into books
For all those of them that love the fact books
For the ones that for certain think all you do is sit and read books.
The ones that like to “do” stuff..
For that kid that keeps taking stuff apart
Those kids that keep all sorts of weird %*$& Stuff in there pockets.
You all know that kid:
They could be on the spectrum somewhere but mostly they are just smarter than you are.
He doesn’t have a ton of friends because (see above) She talks above everyone else. (Kinda the only way they know.)
She has already read all the good books in you library. Now you feel guilty because you keep recommending “lesser” books.
They are clearly the reason the Discovery Channel and the History Channel and the Smithsonian Channel and the National Geographic Channel exist.
Right now they are awkward, even in their own skin, but someday she will be that genius nerd that helps plan your escape from a turkish prison. (Hey, not judging. Just happy you had the help.)
Top Secret Student Profile:
Tiera Fletcher
This is me
Maybe don't listen to old white men who tell you Profiling is good.
The Rules:
If I am going to “do STEM stuff” in my elementary library
It needs to conform to the realities of my little world.
Crayons break.
They lose their edge, they shrink.
This is the reality of an elementary life.
Crayons also melt and reform easily
All you need is:
a hammer,
a candy model and
a microwave. / Toaster oven
This is one of the most popular activities in our library
1: break the crayon into small pieces. (4 smashes with a rubber mallet.)
2:Put those pieces in a silicone candy mold. (no paper)
3. Put you name in the corresponding box.
4. Nuke the mold for 3/4 min.

DO NOT READ THIS BOOK:
One potential script here is as follows:
This book has been banned or forbidden for you to read by someone who does not know you, is not your parent or guardian or even your annoying older brother/sister.
Therefore you certainly cannot read it and I am going to lock it away. Using the top secret code number that I wrote on the side of the lock so I won’t forget.
(insert evil laugh here.)

Kids LOVE all things “potty related :
Dav Pilkey understood the power of this before most other adults. Not counting teachers and Librarians of course
But the science behind, or maybe within a diaper… is EVERYTHING you could want in an activity for EVERY grade level.
All you need is:
A Personal story of Christmas Diaper

This idea can start small but will grow to fit your capacity.
All you need to start is an Envelope and a scrap of paper.
This site is exactly as fun as it looks.

Morse feels a bit...passe.
But it's a great entry point
And your kids dont know the word passe anyway.
Size Matters
Every children's librarian knows the size of the book matters.
If I said. “A giraffe is 20 feet tall, at least
4 people in here are going to look up at the ceiling.
2 because they are bored
2 to guess what 20 feet looks like
(Thank you, if you are in the latter group)
Current Thoughts:
I do realize that not everyone has the same odd collecting habits I do, but then again…
You are all BOTH teachers and LIBRARIANS so I may not appear as crazy in this room as I do in others.
This little guy is a dollar toy from
Party City.
You know those Super frustrating PD’s
Where they give you new stuff... That might actually be of value...
and NOT enough time to explore?
This is about to be that. Sorry-
But our website is open 24 hours a day.
Hey, you’re a library, maybe use a bookmark.
