What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you understand the properties of substances that distinguish them from mixtures. In this module, the learners understand and investigate the properties of substances and mixtures. There are a lot of materials found in our community that will be used in our lesson like chorine, sodium, water different food in the supermarket. A series of activities, questions and answers will encounter and lead to the learners in the learning process.

The module contains only one lesson:

    • Lesson 1 – Substances and Mixtures

After going through this module, you are expected to distinguish mixtures from substances based on a set of properties (S7MT-Ie-f-4)

MODULE TITLE: SUBSTANCES AND MIXTURE

SUBJECT: SCIENCE 7 QUARTER: 1 MODULE: 3

24 of 69

Specifically, you are expected to:

    • distinguish mixtures from compounds according to its composition and properties;

    • classify materials as substances or mixtures; and

    • determine the unknown materials as substances or mixtures based on the given descriptions/statements.

LESSON 1: Substances and Mixtures

26 of 69

You have learned that substances can be classified into elements and compounds. An element is a basic form of matter and contains only one kind of atom. Elements are subdivided into metal, non-metal and metalloids. On the other hand, a compound is another type of pure substance that contains one or more elements with fix ratio.

MODULE TITLE: SUBSTANCES AND MIXTURE

SUBJECT: SCIENCE 7 QUARTER: 1 MODULE: 3

29 of 69

What’s New?

Pure substances are further broken down into elements and compounds. Mixtures are physically combined structures that can be separated into their original condition, which then can be classified as Homogenous Mixture and Heterogeneous Mixtures. In a homogeneous mixture, the components that are combined can no longer be recognized while in heterogeneous mixture, the components can still be identified.

What’s New?

Looking around, we see that all materials are composed of pure substances and mixtures. Mixture is a combination of two or more pure substances in which each substance retains its characteristics or properties.

Philippines is an archipelago surrounded by different bodies of water. One of which is a sea water from the ocean. Ocean water significantly contains higher amount of minerals of sodium, magnesium, sulfur, etc.

Compound

Mixture

Definition

Are formed chemically by combining two or more elements

Formed by physically mixing two or more substances

Composition

Chemical composition of compound is always fixed.

A mixture can have a varied composition of the substances forming it.

Nature

Compounds are always homogeneous in nature

Mixture are both homogeneous and heterogeneous in nature.

Method of Separation

Compound can only be separated by chemical means.

Mixture can be separated by physical separation method ex. Filtration, etc.

Properties

The properties of compounds are unique to themselves.

Components that contains mixture do not lose their properties and so, the properties of a mixture are generally the sum of the properties of its constituents.

Examples

Water, salt, baking soda

Soil and water, sand and water
