How does mapping help achieve gender equality?

A 2020 study by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security looked at various factors affecting women's inclusion, safety and justice across all 50 U.S states and the District of Columbia. They used the US Women, Peace, and Security index, which is composed of 12 factors (seen to the right) affecting women's inclusion, security, and justice to determine which states were the safest - and the most dangerous - for women across the United States. Analysis showed that the most advantageous state to be a woman was Massachusetts, scoring almost four times better than Louisiana at the bottom.
Drawing attention to unmapped buildings in a larger urban area can make it easier for women to access resources or determine safe avenues of travel; and it helps local municipalities more effectively understand the ecosystem of their cities and identify areas where women's security may be put at risk.
