What do highly competitive colleges say about AP?

“One of the best standard predictors of academic success at Harvard is performance on Advanced Placement examinations.”

William R. Fitzsimmons

Dean of Admissions, Harvard University

“AP exams affirm the rigor of a student’s course work. Though admissions policies vary, if I were a student, I wouldn’t assume that the college of my dreams didn’t care about AP exams in the admissions process.”

—Bruce Walker

Director of Admissions, University of Texas

Advanced Placement

Dual Enrollment

Nationally accepted as being rigorous - good if you're considering going out of state

Accepted by colleges as being rigorous

College credit not guaranteed - Must make a certain score on the AP exam to get college credit. Colleges could grant elective credit.

Great option if you're planning on attending a college in Georgia as classes transfer

Classes on campus at DHS - No need to leave school

Automatically receive college credit upon completion

In some instances, classes may be a little more rigorous than dual enrollment

Must earn a C or better for transfer credit; often must earn a C or better to take the next course in the sequence

Teachers are at Dacula - more communicative and available

Get a feel for college-level courses

Limited to AP courses available at DHS

Limited to 30 credit hours

Does my student check his/her/their email regularly?

Can my student keep track of a varying schedule?

Will my student show up to their classes if attendance isn't being recorded?

Is my student good at managing assignments and deadlines independently?

Can my student meet with and communicate with their counselor and teachers independently?

Is Dual Enrollment Right For Your Student?

The DE process is student-led, as it requires students to manage adult-level responsibilities. If a student cannot manage this process independently from their parents/guardians, they are not ready for dual enrollment. A few questions you may ask to decide if your student is ready:

SLIDESMANIA.COM

36 of 60

Colleges will NOT communicate with the DE Coordinator/High School Counselor or parents/guardians regarding the student. Students are responsible for ALL interactions with the college including admissions and professors.

Holidays and breaks, such as spring break, may be different than GCPS holidays and breaks. Students must still attend college courses even if GCPS is on holiday.

Colleges have little to no leniency toward late work, late applications, etc.

Pushing students into dual enrollment before they're ready can have costly consequences.

Students are responsible for keeping up with important info pertaining to DHS (senior info, counseling info, sports, activities, etc.)

Schedules do not always work out perfectly, and students must plan their college classes around DHS classes. Students are NOT allowed on Dacula's campus when they don't have a class at Dacula.
