Lesson 4: The Water Cycle and Earth Systems
How does weather impact the terrain in California?
Take a look at this satellite view of part of our state.
What ideas or questions do you have?
view of California. Prompt: How does weather impact terrain in California?
How does water impact California?
Create this chart in your notes. Write down your ideas for each of the 4 sections. If you can, discuss with a peer and add to your notes. What patterns do you notice?
Water matter particles have three stages: solid, liquid, and gas.
Add your questions and ideas about this to your notebook!
Let’s review what we know about water molecules!
Watch this simulation of water molecules when they are cold and when they are hot.l
What do you notice about changes in their movements when they are warmed up?
Write down your observations in your notebook.
What is Smoke/Fog/Steam (SFS)?
Write down your ideas in your notebook.
This is the prompt that we will visit throughout this lesson.
Let’s see the video experiment! In the previous slide video, you saw what happens when you add near boiling water to dry ice. This simulates the same effect as fog. In this video, you will see dry ice and rubbing alcohol mixed which gives a similar effect. What gas is being dispersed in the “fog” here? How do you know? Write down your ideas in your notebooks along with a diagram of this experiment, labels, include input and output of the system also please.
Do NOT try this experiment at home!
What do we know so far? Here are a couple of my ideas. Add another one of your own with these to your notebook.
Water molecules when heated, spread out taking more space and they move faster.
SFS or Smoke/Fog/Steam is a “cloud” close to the ground made of water droplets.
Research about SFS. Start with viewing these videos and taking notes on what seems important. This is a good time to draw diagrams of systems in your notebook to help explain the process.

Cross-cutting Concept
Cause and Effect
How does the science “Cause and Effect” concept work with weather changes and energy?
Write your thoughts in your notebook.
Science and Engineering Practices Choice Board!
Choose the practice you used the most today and click on the words in the box.!
Read the descriptions of how engineers and scientists think in this practice and decide which one seems most like your thinking today.
Finally, write your thoughts about this in your notebook or slide.
