Engineering Design Process Steps

  • DEFINE: What is the problem? Who are you solving for?
  • IDENTIFY: What are some constraints on your solutions (eg: time, money, materials)? What is the criteria for success?
  • BRAINSTORM: Come up with LOTS of ways to solve to problem. Draw some diagrams.
  • SELECT: Pick out your most promising solution. Make a list of materials you will need.
  • PROTOTYPE: Make your design!!
  • TEST: Try out your design and see what works and what you can make better
  • ITERATE: Improve on your prototype, or learn from others and test it out again!
  • COMMUNICATE: Share your design with your user, or your community
