Targeted teaching and learning support aims to provide teachers with an intensive wrap around programme of learning during their first year teaching in our schools.

Each of the Professional Learning and Development elements are designed to support teachers to become at home in a digital world, and confidently harness the affordances of digital technologies in their practice.

Outcomes include teachers developing their capability to engage our young people both behaviourally and cognitively and to empower learners and accelerate achievement, through creative learning opportunities,

The combined elements of this programme are designed to support all Manaiakalani learners to understand the power of belonging to connected learning networks, and to develop the competencies to participate in respectful and positive sharing in the digital world.

Orientation Site

To welcome new staff to our cluster and an opportunity to connect with The Manaiakalani Programme and Network.

Since 2013 we have facilitated Manaiakalani orientation in late January before school starts for the year. There is an open invitation for any staff to participate however the purpose is to welcome new staff to our kāhui ako and support our people to confidently connect with the goals of our education programme, including raising educational outcomes for our young people through effective teaching, in a future focused community of learning.

Connecting with the Manaiakalani programme encompasses:

who we are (he tangata, he tangata, he tangata), what is the Manaiakalani education programme, how are we working to achieve the goals and vision of the Manaiakalani programme and what opportunities there are for teachers to participate and contribute.

Orientation also includes at least two sessions where teachers are supported to create and prepare their Learning site for the year. In 1:1 environments it is critical that sites are visible and accessible on Day 1 of school. Sites are the first port of call for learners on their devices and a visible Learning Site is essential if we are to expect learners to engage positively with their learning, our Cybersmart Curriculum and expectations of the Manaiakalani Kawa of Care and responsible use of their device.

Manaiakalani expect that teachers who are new to our schools or new to 1:1 and receiving in class support from a facilitator, will attend orientation. This is often the first opportunity for them to connect with the facilitation team and ensure that their site is ready to share when school opens for the year.

More importantly Cybersmart learners ( and I also suspect increasing more of our whānau) also expect that they should be able to locate their class learning site at the very least from their school site and connect with their learning from day 1 of a new year.

In Class Facilitation

In class facilitation is provided once a week for teachers nominated by their school. This support is for teachers new in a 1:1 digital learning environment. Supporting teacher digital fluency and confidence to deliver the curriculum in a digital environment is a priority. We use the Manaiakalani Cybersmart curriculum as the context for modelling Learn Create Share in these classrooms.

Planning for in class facilitation via the Cybersmart curriculum enables facilitators to prepare and best utilise their time with the teacher, while providing the flexibility to respond to individual teacher needs or requests. Teachers are expected to be in the classroom engaging with learners and the learning, observing the facilitator and/or co-teaching.

In years 9-13 due to the structure of a college timetable the facilitator may support within the context of the subject content when in classrooms or may also support teachers during a timetabled non-contact period.

In class Facilitation provides authentic opportunities to:

develop learning focused relationships that are responsive to individual teachers and better recognise and meet the needs of their learners

contextualise and support the teaching-learning relationship as it takes place.

identify what is important for each teacher and their students and collaborate with them to identify what strategies and approaches are more likely to be successful, while learning is in progress and over time. (regular weekly sessions in class)

demonstrate effective pedagogy (learn create share) and build digital fluency of both teachers and learners

Cybersmart teaching and learning is designed to provide an authentic context for teachers and learners to:

connect with the Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy

build their capacity to harness digital technologies for teaching and learning

build their confidence to make smart decisions when connecting and sharing online

engage both teachers and our young people to learn, create and share as confident, connected digital citizens.

build capacity to further integrate Cybersmart learning into their practice to support existing programmes of learning.

Each cybersmart category includes key learning concepts that are critical to enabling our young people to make smart decisions when learning, creating and sharing online.

Cybersmart Teaching and Learning is also informed by our Manaiakalani Kawa of Care an agreement between students, parents and schools to ensure the best care and responsibility of the device is exercised during each student’s time in the Manaiakalani Programme.

Literally translated - Write to me, write to others. We are using our class blogging platform to build powerful connections across our cluster and Manaiakalani Outreach through Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu. By harnessing our Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy Learn Create Share, Tui Mai Tuhi Atu empowers our young people to learn to be Cybersmart through leaving quality blog comments and engaging in online behaviour and thinking that elevates positive actions.

Teachers team up in groups or 3 and take turns to comment on each others class and individual learners blogs.

Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu is also a key component of the in-class support. Many of the teachers receiving in class support are also new to Blogging and the Cybersmart Curriculum. Participating and contributing to Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu, with the support of a facilitator, enables authentic implementation of Cybersmart learning and provides a supported framework for teachers and learners to experience the impact that sharing positively makes to our lives both academically and to our wellbeing.

Through Manaiakalani Outreach we are also able to connect with a network of educators and learners throughout New Zealand, creating an authentic audience for our young people.

In 2019 we had over 60 blogging teams participating from across Manaiakalani and the 10 Outreach Clusters. Online support also includes weekly updates sharing tips and strategies and featuring blogs from participating schools.

We are seeing teachers and learners making strong connections with others and their understanding of what it is to be a connected learner.

Toolkits

PLGs and Toolkits provide additional opportunities for learning outside the 9-3. Our PLG themes this year have been designed to support teachers to implement Learn Create Share and in response to needs identified during in-class support.

While The Manaiakalani programme delivery is heavily weighted to supporting pedagogy and effective teaching practice we all know technology changes rapidly. With updates to our most commonly used tools launched almost weekly, it is important that we provide support for our teachers to acquire and maintain digital fluency.

Toolkits provide an opportunity for us to focus in short bursts on tools and apps which teachers and learners find useful.
Manaiakalani facilitators develop the Toolkit programme, deliver content and where possible recognise and support expertise in our cluster’s teachers to also deliver sessions.
Toolkits and PLGs are programmed throughout the year at regular intervals on the cluster calendar. Toolkits are hosted locally in schools from 3:30pm - 4:30pm in Week 2 and online in Week 6 each term.

Staff Meetings

Each term the Manaiakalani Cluster hosts staff meetings as an opportunity for our people to continue to connect and develop a deeper understanding of our Kaupapa and Pedagogy

LEARN�CREATE�SHARE

Staff Meetings are led in individual schools or as cluster events.

Each term the Innovation Team support a staff meeting prepared for our schools to build an increased understanding of the Manaiakalani pedagogy and kaupapa. This is important for all staff to connect with, not just the teachers receiving in-class support. This may be the one opportunity for some of your staff to connect with Manaiakalani at this level.

Staff Meetings focus on connecting staff with our Learn Create Share pedagogy, and specifically interpreting each of these elements in relation to the goals of the Manaiakalani programme.

School leaders can collaborate with facilitators to plan and/or lead staff meetings in schools. This year we have also come together for cluster wide staff meetings. Cluster events increase opportunities for new staff to connect with Manaiakalani people and the impact of the education programme both at home at across Aotearoa.

To recognise existing effective practice in our schools, demonstrated by our teachers and to explore and make connections with how the Manaiakalani Programme is amplifying and turbocharging effective practice.

To understand that creativity empowers learning and is designed as a hook for our learners, specifically to meet the foundation goal of the Manaiakalani programme, to motivate our learners to engage with the curriculum. To create with our minds, our voices our bodies and our hearts.

And to connect through sharing - we have increased evidence that while sharing is a basic human instinct our kaupapa is empowering our young people to harness technology to share not only with reach and speed but also with care and consideration

Kāhui Ako

Teachers

The Manaiakalani Cluster have 24 teachers appointed to our Kāhui Ako, including four across school teachers who are available to support teachers in school with their identified achievement challenges.

Our Kāhui Ako Teachers participate and contribute to two PLGs each term and also report on their Teaching as Inquiry including interventions, changes in their practice and the impact on teaching and learning via their professional blogs.

We currently have 24 community of learning teachers, including four across school teachers who are available to support teachers in school with their identified achievement challenges. Our CoL Teachers participate and contribute to two PLGs each term and also report on their Teaching as Inquiry including interventions, changes in their practice and the impact on teaching and learning. Progress reports are shared on their blogs with the intention of providing a visible and accessible learning reference for all our teachers.

As Rebecca Jesson (WFR) says …. “Can someone replicate what you did based on what you are sharing on your blog”

We have had awesome support from the team at Wolf Fisher - not only are our CoL teachers actively participating in TaI in their practice but they are also increasing their understanding and knowledge of what make for effective TaI. The processes and procedures are shared with all our schools.

Nominated teachers are released fully from class to attend a DFI one day a week for nine weeks.

In 2017 the Manaiakalani Principals in partnership with the Manaiakalani Education Trust agreed to pilot a new approach to supporting effective teachers in their quest to become "At Home in Digital World". All our learners now live in a digital world, and the majority of them are now being educated in digital learning environments. With this in mind the 9 day DFI is designed to ensure that:

Our teachers are supported to understand how the Manaiakalani pedagogy and kaupapa has been co-constructed over more than a decade to maximise the impact of effective teaching and learning in a digital learning environment.
Our teachers are supported to understand how digital technologies used effectively can have a significant impact on accelerating achievement outcomes
Our teachers are supported to acquire fluency using the basic tools our young people use for learning
Our teachers are supported to acquire fluency using the basic tools required for effective teaching, planning, assessment and professional learning

While this programme is open to all our people, in conjunction with in class support it contributes to a powerful professional learnig opportunity for new teachers.

Secondary Connects & Department Discussions

The Manaiakalani Secondary Connects have been scheduled once a term since 2020. Guest speakers from across the Manaiakalani network showcase effective strategies to help engage and turbocharge students' learning across the curriculum.

The Manaiakalani Department Discussions are online meetings held via Google Meet with teachers from across the country. The aim is to inspire teachers' practice in high school settings and network with like minded colleagues in their specialist subject area.
