Overview

Revue Starlight is a Japanese media franchise created in 2017 by Bushiroad, Nelke Planning and Kinema Citrus.
It primarily consists of a series of musicals, debuting between September 22 and 24, 2017 at the AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo; a 12-episode anime television series directed by Tomohiro Furukawa which aired between July and September 2018; and two animated films, released on August 7, 2020, and June 4, 2021, which abridged and continued the story of the anime.
It has received three manga adaptations, all of which began serialization in January 2018.
A smartphone game titled Shōjo Kageki Revue Starlight: Re LIVE, developed by Ateam, launched in October 2018.
Six years after the game's launch, the game ended service for all servers in September 2024.
The franchise tells original and interconnected stories about the training, personal lives, and growth of several groups of female performing arts students, who are distinguished from their peers as “Stage Girls” by their exceptional zeal for stage acting, ambition for stardom, and competitive nature.

Seisho Music Academy

Seisho Music Academy is a fictional school appearing in the Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight franchise, which the main characters in the franchise attend.
It is an academy made with the purpose of fostering those with talent for performance and has a proud history of 100 years.
It is divided into the Actor Training Department, in which students learn to be stage actresses, and the Stage Production Department, in which students learn how to work behind the scenes.
The Actor Training Department is also known as “Group A”, and the Stage Production Department is also known as “Group B”.

Karen Aijo

She is the protagonist and poster girl of the Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight franchise.
She set out on the road to becoming a Stage Girl after being captivated by a performance of Starlight she saw as a child.
She is always boisterous and cheerful but hates early morning lessons.
She joins the mysterious Revue with Hikari, who crossed fates with her when they were young girls.
She has an enthusiastic and warm nature, which makes her strive to befriend her fellow Stage Girls, rather than compete with them.

Hikari Kagura

She is the deuteragonist of the Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight franchise.
She is Karen's childhood friend.
She is a born performer who studied at Royal Academy of Theatrical Actors (RATA) in England.
Her fate has been linked with Karen's since viewing a performance of Starlight.
Reuniting with her old friend, she is driven by a strong desire to join the mysterious Revue.

Mahiru Tsuyuzaki

Though she sings and dances her heart out on stage, she is normally withdrawn and contemplative.
She admires her roommate Karen's cheery and outgoing nature, but her feelings are put in a difficult place when Karen's old friend Hikari shows up.
She is the eldest child of a farming family in rural Hokkaido.
She earned many awards in middle school recognizing her performance and baton twirling talent and enrolled in Seisho Music Academy at her grandmother's behest.
She possesses strong domestic skills and physical strength from family and farm life.

Claudine Saijo

Born to a Japanese father and a French mother, she is a talented girl who already has a long career as a child actress.
Upon entering the school, she meets the brilliant Maya Tendo and immediately begins a staunch rivalry.
She is pretty friendly with her classmates since she’s on a first name basis with all of them and has no trouble joking around with them.
She has a lot of confidence in her abilities, which she doesn't try to hide, but she continuously puts work into staying at the top.
She highly values determination and has a lot of emotional intelligence.

Maya Tendo

She is practically born for the theater world with a renowned stage actor and a prima donna for parents.
Blessed with a good physique and a carrying voice, she refuses to rest on her laurels and always strives to reach greater heights.
She is recognized by her peers as the 99th class's top student and is even addressed as “Maya-sama”.
She is a very reserved person and appreciates people who work hard to overcome her.
Privately, she harbours imperious and seething jealousy toward all who threaten her dominance on stage, the product of bitter competition in performances past.

Junna Hoshimi

She is a top student who serves as the class representative.
She has great decision-making and analytical skills but is prone to overthinking.
Raised to study hard and excel in academics, she discovered her passion for theatre on her own.
After choosing to pursue acting against her parents' wishes, she now frets over the gap in skill between herself and those with natural talent like Maya.
Though she does play the part of a strict honors student on occasion, she is shown to have fun with the other members and even participate in rulebreaking for their sake.

Nana Daiba

She is the de facto mother of the 99th class and is kind and caring to her classmates.
She is nicknamed “Banana” due to her name, her distinctive hairstyle, and her fond of bananas.
She is talented not only in singing and dancing but also as a director.
She is still delighted by the group performance of Starlight back in her first year.
She excels in performance with her tall stature, cooks numerous beloved recipes for the other students, and even helps in backstage work.

Futaba Isurugi

She is a highly unorthodox Stage Girl who came to Seisho Music Academy along with her childhood friend Kaoruko.
She is a kind-hearted girl despite her rough words and takes care of Kaoruko while always griping.
Tiny but athletic, she shows deadly aptitude for staged swordfights.
She never backs down and looks out for others, if given a command, she will do it in the best way she can.
She is reserved and patient with others, but when it comes to Kaoruko, it has limits.

Kaoruko Hanayagi

She is the granddaughter of the head of a traditional Japanese dance school and has refined skills in traditional song and dance.
Raised in privilege, she is all too reliant on Futaba.
While she is always smiling, she is more calculating than anyone else.
She speaks in the elegant Kyoto dialect.
While she remains quite self-centered in some measure, she joins the rest of the Stage Girls in competing and contributing in school and life.

Seiran General Arts Institute

Seiran General Art Institute is a fictional school introduced in the sequel stage play, Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight -The LIVE- 2 Transition.
Impressed by the performance of Starlight put on at the 100th Seisho Festival, they initiate an “exchange program” with the 99th class of Seisho, which is actually a front for their true intention: to claim Starlight for their own.
They are the protagonists of the the spin-off stage play, Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight -The LIVE Seiran- BLUE GLITTER.
They officially made their debut in the game Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight Re LIVE’s Japanese servers on December 2020.

Koharu Yanagi

She is the leader of the Seiran General Art Institute Stage Department Performance Major.
She is dubbed “Seiran's genius”, even Maya recognizes her skills.
No one knows what she's thinking, but in her heart, she's hiding a calm fighting spirit.
As class leader, she feels a burden to represent Seiran and leave a good impression when interacting with the other schools, though this causes her to struggle with balancing the stage alongside other things (usually interpersonal relationships).
Her serious attitude also causes her to respond with difficulty to Stage Girls with freer perspectives, becoming flustered with unexpected ad-libs.

Suzu Minase

She is the sub leader of the Seiran General Art Institute Stage Department Performance Major.
She is Mahiru's junior high school friend and was close to her but also saw her as her rival.
The two get separated after Suzu collapsed during a joint practice.
She is an outgoing girl with a happy-go-lucky attitude.
She is very hyper and energetic and often teases Hisame and Koharu.

Hisame Honami

She is the sub leader of the Seiran General Art Institute Stage Department Performance Major.
She is Nana's junior high school friend.
She has a beautiful singing voice and was part of the chorus club in middle school.
She tried to perform with Nana but wasn't able to after incurring the resentment of the other members of the chorus team.
She was born into a family of musicians and learned how to play the piano from her mother and the violin from her grandmother.

Rinmeikan Girls School

Rinmeikan Girls School is a fictional school appearing in the Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight franchise, original to the game Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight Re LIVE.
It is a school with the goal of instilling its students with “Yamato Nadeshiko” ideals.
Tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy, and Japanese dance classes have made the school known for its emphasis on traditional Japanese culture.
With decreasing student numbers, the school's courses are undergoing reorganization.

Tamao Tomoe

Good-natured and kind to everyone, she is imbued with traditional Japanese ideals.
She strives daily to uphold the school's traditions and its precepts of strength, kindness, and beauty.
Her mother and grandmother both graduated from Rinmeikan Girls School, giving her a unique fondness for the school.
She is Kaoruko's childhood friend.
With the department facing closure, she fights ardently for its survival.

Her last name literally means “silent”, but she's a rowdy little troublemaker.
She is not exactly a deep thinker, but her forthrightness draws in those around her.
In junior high, she wanted to be an idol singer and is confident in her dancing and singing abilities.
She enjoys her daily verbal sparring with Fumi.
While she can be clumsy, she is willing to work to become a better Stage Girl.

Fumi Yumeoji

She is Shiori’s sister.
Formerly a top student at the renowned Siegfeld Institute of Music, holding the position of “Frau Jade”, circumstances led Fumi to transfer to Rinmeikan Girls School, intending to leave the stage behind.
Everyone agrees she enjoys taking care of others, but she insists that she doesn't.
She loves flavoring her food with ponzu.
She is described to be a strong and tough girl who is often serious, though she is sometimes offensive.

Rui Akikaze

She became inspired to act after being instantly smitten with Tamao’s performance skills in junior high.
Thanks to Tamao's training, she's gradually gotten better about her stage fright and dealing with pressure.
She has a strong admiration for Tamao as the person who inspired her to act.
She is especially proficient in stage fighting.
In addition to theater, she practices kendo and is noted to be fairly good at it.

She prefers staying up late and sleeping during the day and is always tired at school because of this.
She hides any hint of putting in effort and works hard in secret.
Fond of traditional Japanese performing arts, she especially likes rakugo storytelling.

She tends to understand people's emotions and thoughts well without being told anything explicitly.

Frontier School of Arts is a fictional school appearing in the Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight franchise, original to the game Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight Re LIVE.
It is a newly founded school with the intention of fostering students with artistic talent.
It has a culture of freedom, and its new types of classes, gym, and barbecue areas have attracted a growing number of applicants.
However, the school and its students are sometimes seen as crude or boorish to those with more traditional views.

Always smiling with a naturally cheerful disposition, she never lets anything get her down.
She was an amateur with no acting experience, but thanks to her earnestness and ability to get people around her involved in things, she is growing rapidly.

She is an enthusiastic baker, but her creations are mostly inedible.

She is also fond of anime, manga, and tokusatsu dramas.
She has a strong sense of what she believes is right and sticks to her values very thoroughly.

While she strikes some as fun-loving and shallow, her acting skills are undeniable, and she stands alongside Shizuha at the top of the class.

She is shown to have confidence in her musical skills.
Both Misora and Aruru have described her as having good manners, which is likely due to her upbringing.

One of the preeminent students in the Frontier School of Arts Stage Expression Course, her looks and acting talent have put her in the spotlight since her junior high school days.
However, because of her skill, she's often pressured by adults around her to diminish herself in order to let other people shine brighter.
She is very health-conscious and is always offering health drinks to her dubious friends that are very nutritious but taste awful.
Outside of acting, she is a renowned gamer and is incredibly fond of computers.

It is a music institution founded to educate students who have the potential to perform around the world.
The school is seen as elite thanks to its impressive facilities and diverse staff.
There is a tradition that the most talented students are given the title of “Edel” (noble) and receive special privileges.

She is one of the elite students from the Music Acting Department at Siegfeld Institute of Music with the title “Frau Platin”, who is said to be the most talented student in the history of the esteemed school.

She is well-respected in the school as its top student and is often admired and looked up to.
Beneath her harsh exterior, she is actually quite caring and perceptive.
She is not one to rest on her laurels and acknowledges those who relentlessly work to go above and beyond her expectations.

He doesn't physically appear in the stage play version, but he is heard as he is still a big presence there.

She is a girl who invites Karen and the rest to the auditions.
She does not speak much, and her emotions seldom surface.
She is respectful to the Stage Girls and sometimes admonishes Andrew for disrespectful behavior.

He is a character in the Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight franchise, original to Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight Re LIVE.
He is a mole mascot who is seen with Elle running the underground theater in the game.
He is also in charge of the in-game shop, which exists as a real store in the story.
He insists that he is cute and gets defensive when the Stage Girls say otherwise.
He adds “doryū” (from his name, Andoryū) to the end of his sentences when he speaks, and sometimes says “doryū” by itself as an exclamation.

She is the headmistress of Seisho Music Academy and the Underground Theater stage director in Shōjo☆Kageki Revue Starlight -The LIVE- #1.
She belonged to Seisho Music Academy's 74th Graduating Class, where she served as the representative of the Actor Training Department and was considered the Top Star, lauded for being a solitary prodigy.
After graduation, she began a career as a prolific actress, performing in the renowned stage production of “Starlight”.
She has garnered a reputation among her students for being notoriously brisk and stern and believes in self-sufficiency.
