ESV

1 Timothy 1:3–7 (NASB95)

3As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,

4nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.

5But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

6For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion,

7wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

2 Timothy 2:23–26 (NASB95)

23But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels.

24The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged,

25with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth

26and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

10For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present I need not use severity, in accordance with the authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

Is this charge for church leadership or for all believers? By what standard?

Matthew 16:18–19 (NASB95)

18“I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

19“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

Matthew 18:17–18 (NASB95)

17“If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

18“Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.

  • 2:15 / Speak and exhort and reprove with all authority

21“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”

22(which all refer to things destined to perish with use)—in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men?

23These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

Mark 7:7–9; 20-23 (NASB95)

7‘But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’

8Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”

9He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.

20And He was saying, “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.

21“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,

22deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.

23“All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”

Commandment of God: All who have fallen short of the glory of God, must humble themselves in repentance and faith, and be justified freely and only by His grace, and thus be restored to their Creator and worship Him eternally in spirit and in truth.

How Does One Become Sound in the Faith

We have no hope outside of Christ!

  • The problem is the heart.

  • Sinners cannot purify their own hearts through ritual, deed or effort.

  • You need a new heart. [Ezekiel 36:26; Hebrews 8:10]

  • Those with new (pure) hearts cannot help but to engage in good deeds! [Titus]

What is the Truth?

(1:1-3)

  • God promised

(2:11-15)

  • God redeems, God purifies

(3:4-8)

  • God washes, God renews, God justifies

Pure vs. Defiled

ESV

(15) To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.

(16) They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

 NASB

(15) To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

(16) They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

NIV

(15) To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.

(16) They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

Every false religious system 🡺 works based righteousness

Inner purity always produces outer purity (measurable in good deeds!).

Application

  • What is the evidence that you (or don’t) know God?

  • In what ways are you holding fast the traditions of men? In what ways are you holding fast the faithful Word which is in accordance with the teaching?
