We analyzed sales and release data for games from the 1980s through the early 21th century. From here we can see the overall changes in the game market and the characteristics of the industry by comparing publisher sales data, total industry sales, game score distribution.

Q1: The relationship between game authority rating and game sales, market game rating distribution. (To solve this problem, we use the form of dot distribution map to explore. Plot game ratings and sales as x and y weeks.)

We found a positive correlation between game ratings and overall performance.

Changing the format of the content: We found that some of the columns like “total shipped” had items that were strings(like 496.40m), so we establish a function that convert the string to numerical elements. Then, the columns of numbers could be sorted by size. This will help us when we compare sales across of a columns.

Q3:Yearly Game Releases and Their Market Impact

We want to find out the proximate change of the whole game industry.

To do this, we use first extract all the game from each year and add their amount of total shipped together.

Secondly, we make a line graph present the total shipped amount every year, which could reflect the trends of the game industry.

Conclusion

Overall, we see this evolving game industry for the last 30-40 years. As we analyzed, the critical scores of games indeed have positive correlation with total sales. Additionally, the best selling developer is Nintendo, it takes almost half of the market share. Also, the overall game industry for the last 3 decades shows an increase trend of total selling, but slightly decreased during the past three years. Through our analysis, players in Asia, Europe and America have different spending power for different games(ex. fps and soccer games), which I believe will be very beneficial for the company's promotion. The market of games is still progressing and there are more and more competitors joining in, hopefully the gaming industry becomes better and better and brings better games to the players.
