We all experience feelings of burnout from time to time. It is important to recognize burnout. Here are some telltale signs you may be needing a break:

Major signs of burnout:

Chronic fatigue, insomnia, forgetfulness or lack of focus, physical symptoms (like nausea, heart palpitations, headaches, or gastrointestinal pain), increased illness, loss of appetite, anxiety, depression, and anger.

Signs of growing burnout:

Cynicism, loss of enjoyment, pessimism, detachment, irritability, poor performance

We all experience some of these symptoms from time to time, but should pay attention when they are becoming regular associations with our volunteering.

How to overcome burnout:

Look for a pattern in your symptoms- are they related to specific situations or tasks? Can you reduce or eliminate those stressors?

How to overcome burnout con’t:

Get time away- not just self-care breaks but daily downtime. Set boundaries about your time online. This can be incredibly difficult as many use online interaction as their main social interaction, but spending time offline is paramount to feeling recharged.

Self-Care! Take self-care breaks and log off completely for a few days.

How to overcome burnout con’t:

Reflect on your available time for volunteering- we all get excited and enjoy taking on new roles, but it doesn’t take long to suddenly have too many obligations. If you are feeling burnout symptoms you may want to reduce your roles. This is perfectly okay and encouraged! Don’t take on too much, it is better to have less titles and enjoy yourself versus all the roles and miserable.

A healthy team makes a healthy community

Pessimistic and irritable team members can derail a team, which then defeats our intention of providing a place of support. Reflect on how you come across to your team.

Be a leader regardless of your role on a team

Good leaders:

  • Positive attitude
  • Adaptive to change
  • Problem solver
  • Collaborates
  • Accountable

Bad leaders:

  • Negative and critical
  • Bossy and controlling
  • Focuses on the problem not the solution
  • Treats team like minions
  • Flakey

If you find yourself in the bad leader category sometimes it is okay! It means you need a self-care break and some time to reflect on your goals as a volunteer.

  • Assess if you need more balance or boundaries
  • Come to a Community Manager if you think you’ve take on too much and want to reduce your commitments
  • Communicate with your team if you need to take a self-care break
  • Keep a fresh attitude towards your volunteer work, and always remember your why
