Modal Verbs – Obligation

Foco no conteúdo

Sarah and Jamie said:

Jamie: But honestly, we have to be careful. Most of the time, we don’t even need the stuff we buy.”

Sarah: These sales make us feel like we must buy things.”

In both the sentences they use modal verbs.

A modal verb is an auxiliary verb followed by another verb to express an idea such as an obligation, possibility, permission, or ability.

must + verb” and “have to” can express an obligation.

Re-read the examples above and notice the use of the modal verb “must” and the idea of obligation expressed by Sarah and Jamie during their conversation about Black Friday sales.

Audio script:

Sarah: Hey, Jamie! Black Friday is coming up again. Have you seen the ads?

Jamie: Yeah, they’re everywhere. It feels like they’re shouting: “Buy this! Don’t miss out!”. But honestly, we have to be careful. Most of the time, we don’t even need the stuff we buy.

Sarah: I know what you mean. Last year, I bought a fancy blender. Guess how many times I’ve used it? Once! And that’s not all. I also bought a pair of wireless headphones because they were on sale. But I already had good headphones, so I didn’t really need them. They’re still in the box!

Jamie: That sounds familiar. I bought a new smartphone last year just because it was on sale. The thing is, my old phone worked perfectly fine. Now I have two phones. I keep the old one for emergencies.

Sarah: See? These sales make us feel like we must buy things. They create this “fear of missing out,” even when we don’t really need anything.

Jamie: Totally. This year, I’m making a list of things I really need. If it’s not on the list, I won’t buy it.

Sarah: That’s a great idea. I should do the same. We must not fall into the trap of buying things just because they’re on sale. This Black Friday, let’s focus on being smarter with our choices.

Jamie: Deal. No more blenders, unopened headphones, or unused phones!
