Online Physical Education with Emphasis on Communication

Can you exercise 5 days a week?

  • Each teacher will need to decide the minimum number of minutes they will accept for each week.
  • This depends on the age/grade level of the student.
  • What would they do in your face to face class and then choose a % that is acceptable, knowing that there is usually standing around waiting your turn in the class.
  • We just want them up and moving being active– not perfecting a sport or activity but an introduction.
  • I shoot for 180 minutes a week in one of these formats:
  • 3 days a week for 60 minutes each day, or 4 days a week for 45 minutes each day, or 5 days a week for 40 minutes and lastly 6 days a week for 30 minutes each day. I just do not want them doing 150 minutes one day and 30 on another. So I give them these choices!

Students making videos Safely!

  • Always emphasize safety first when making videos!!!
  • Suggest a sibling or parent video while the student demonstrates the skill.
  • If they do not want or have anyone to video have the student place their computer with camera, tablet, or phone in a secure location and set timer to record. Remember it needs to be close enough for the teacher to see and hear the student if they are speaking.
  • Some students will do the video and then voice over if the assignment requires them to speak.

Equipment for online PE

  • There are many ways you can handle equipment:
  • If the student does not have the equipment, maybe they can borrow it from another family member or neighbor.
  • They can use something similar: No basketball any round ball (volleyball, soccer, kickball, etc)
  • Make something with things they have: No putter- use a short broom, hockey stick, or tape a flat object like a bar of soap to end of a stick or baseball bat. Use a solo cup as your target in putting. Use a basket or box as a target if playing frisbee golf.
  • ***Remember you are just wanting to know that they understand the concept, it will not be perfect. They will usually surprise you.

Special Needs /Adaptive PE

  • There are many ways exercise can be adapted.
  • Decrease the intensity level.
  • Have the person exercise while seated
  • If doing standing exercises have them hold onto a chair or counter with one or both hands.
  • Instead of weights use resistance bands if possible or bungee cords.
  • Modified push ups – Use knees or use a wall instead of floor.

Communication

  • The More you communicate the more success your students will participate in your class
  • Start will a school email - Then follow up with a phone call or virtual meeting
  • I mention this as... Who knows what the format will be used at the start of the next school year.
  • In that phone call: Basic Questions List I ask them if they are enrolled in this class, How comfortable are they with the virtual classroom, maybe they moved into the area…..Did they receive my email as I want to make sure I have a good working email. What is the best phone number to reach them and do they receive text messages? I let them know my office hours if they need assistance or have questions and tell them the fastest way for me to answer is through text messages or the Remind app. You may want to ask them if they have an IEP or 504. BIGGEST REASON you are establishing a relationship.

Include Parents in emails and phone calls. Also email their counselor or Special Needs teachers.

Communication

  • Success – I know that the more I communicate with the student, I seem like a real person.
  • They will most times do the work and feel comfortable in communicating with me/you if they have questions.
  • They will complete the work knowing that if they do not, I will be contacting or making parents aware of their lack of progress and grades.
  • Sometimes students may just need a gently nudge and others more of a push to do the work required to pass the class.
  • I usually let them know in advance that if they do not complete missing assignments I will be reaching out to parents in a couple of days ( usually before the weekend)

Finishing up

  • I just wanted to share this information with you in case you need it to start the school year this fall.
  • You may use it now as school years are coming to a close and maybe several of your students have fallen behind in their progress or grades.
  • Please do not hesitate to communicate GOOD NEWS as well, if a student did something extra for a lesson then let them know! WE all like to be praised or a pat on the back!
