ANTARCTICA

  • Antarctica is the southern most continent in the world and the site of south pole, is a virtually unhabited, ice-covered landmass.

  • Antarctica is bigger than Europe and almost twice the size of Australia.

  • It is the world’s highest ,driest ,windiest ,coldest ,and icest continent. It’s thick ice cover 98 percent of the landmass.

ANTARCTIC OZONE HOLE

  • The Antarctic Ozone Hole is an annual springtime event above earth’s frozen, southernmost continent. Conditions above Antarctica magnify the destructive potential of a changing atmosphere.

  • Naturally occurring Polar Stratospheric Clouds, man-made CFCs, and the return of sunlight set off destructive chain reaction that decimates huge portions of he ozone layer, a critical protection of life on Earth.

  • In 1987, twenty seven nations signed the Montreal Protocol to reduce substances that deplete the ozone layer.

OZONE LAYER

  • It is a thin layer of layer of O3 particles present in the stratosphere .
  • It absorbs harmful UV-B rays and prevent them from entering the earth’s atmosphere.
  • It have an altitude of about 10 to 50 kms.

OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

  • Ozone layer depletion is simply the reduction of the amount of ozone in stratosphere.
  • It is caused by the excessive release of concentrated chlorine and bromine from man made compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFFs).

10 of 17

CAUSES OF OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

  • The main cause for the depletion of the ozone is determined as the excessive release of chlorine and bromine from man-made compound such as chlorofluorocarbons(CFFs).
  • Other ozone-depletion substances (ODS) include hydro chlorofluorocarbons and volatile organic substances (VOSs).

THE PROCESS OF OZONE DEPLETION

  • Ozone Depletion Substances, in the stratosphere, are exposed to UV radiation and thus, they break down to release a free chlorine atom.

  • This free chlorine atom reacts with an ozone particle (O3) , and forms chlorine monoxide(ClO) and a molecule of oxygen.

  • Cl + O3 ClO + O2

  • Now, ClO react with an ozone molecule to form a chlorine atom, and two molecules of oxygen.

  • ClO3 + O Cl + 2O2

  • The free chlorine molecule again reacts with ozone to form chlorine monoxide .

  • The process continues, and this results in the depletion of ozone layer .

EFFECTS OF OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

ON NATURE

  • Crop damage

  • Urban pollutions

  • A large hole is formed over Antarctica in the ozone layer which shows its continuous depletion.

ON HUMANS

  • Eyes Defects and Cataract

  • Weakened Immune System

  • Skin Cancer

  • Malnutrition

IMPORTANCE OF OZONE LAYER

The ozone layer acts as a filter for the shorter wavelength and highly hazardous ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun, protecting life on Earth from its potentially harmful effects .

14 of 17

PROTECTING OZONE LAYER

  • Always use certified refrigerants in car ACs . Repair all the leaks, if any, in AC system .

  • Stop using aerosol sprays/cans.

  • Always purchase ACs and refrigerators with non – ozone depleting refrigerant .

  • Use/buy more recycled products .

  • Always prefer to carpool or use public transport .

  • Desist from using pesticides .

  • Prohibit the use of harmful nitrous oxide .

CONCLUSION

This depletion will get controlled if we control ourselves to use things which are not harmful to nature.
