Solving Systems of Linear Equations by:

  • Graphing - graph the 2 lines, see where they cross
  • Substitution - look for a 1x or a 1y and then get that x or y by itself, substitute what x or y equals into the other equation and solve. Take that answer and substitute back into one of the originals to get the other variable.
  • Elimination - decide which variable to eliminate. Multiply one or both equations by a number so that I can eliminate that variable (by getting them opposite), add equations together and solve for remaining variable. Take that variable and plug back in original to get other variable.

  1. Solve this system by substitution. You should get (-3, -10)3x + y = -19 x - y = 7Make sure you check your solution by substituting into both equations.
  2. Now solve it again, but this time by elimination.
  3. Solve this system by substitution. You should get (10, -2)3y + x = 4 x + y = 8Make sure you check your solution by substituting into both equations.
  4. Now solve it again, but this time by elimination.

How many solutions?

  1. y = 2x + 5 and y = -3x + 2
  2. y = 3x + 8 and y = 3x + 8
  3. y = 2x + 5 and y = 2x + 8
  4. y = 2x + 5 and y = 3x + 2
  5. 2x + 3y = 6 and -4x - 6y = -12
