A vision statement - purpose?

Where are we headed?

What is our focus?

What do we want to stand for as a school?

What do we want to see in our school?

As a C of E school, we need to have a vision statement which reflects our Christian foundations/ is biblical / has a narrative (Bible story to show this)

What does ‘shining a light’ mean as a C of E school?

Where has the idea come from?

Matthew 5: 13 - 16

Sermon on the Mount - speech. Wisdom

Salt and Light

14 -16“ You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”’

New Revised Standard Version

What does ‘shining a light’ mean in a C of E school?

Where has the idea come from?

Salt and Light

114-16 “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”’

The Message

13 of 26

What does ‘shining a light’ mean as a C of E school?

Where has the idea come from in the Bible?

Right from the beginning, when God created light, He said it is GOOD

Jesus said of Himself: ‘I am the light of the world.’

He then told His disciples to be ‘the light of the world’

Light brings revelation and warmth. It is a metaphor for truth (Jesus told His disciples to walk in the light)

Jesus tells His disciples to be the light – to bring the best to others,

to be the best, to be generous. Influence for good! Make a difference!

The recognition that your life has either a positive or a negative effect. The disciples and all Christians from then on –

Live responsibly/well to bring God glory

The curriculum at St Mary’s is a journey that begins in Reception. We aspire to make every child’s journey through the school engaging, challenging and memorable. When their journey with us ends in year 6, they will have been nurtured emotionally, spiritually and academically; able to flourish as they better understand themselves, the world around them and their place in it.

We have sequenced learning in each subject into Learning Journeys so that every child at St Mary’s builds knowledge lesson on lesson, term on term and year on year until they leave us at the end of Year 6. The progression of knowledge and skills is carefully planned and shows how connections across the curriculum are made.

Our topic approach means that classes study one topic more deeply for a term, building cultural capital and a rich body of knowledge. In Reception topics are studied half termly. Termly topics are usually geography-based or history-based and include enriching visits, workshops and visitors.

As children journey through the school, they will focus on a key question each year. This will support and develop their understanding of who they are, where they come from and how events have shaped the world they live in. This is vital to help them determine their place in the world and the role they wish to play in the future.

Key Questions

Reception

Who am I?

Year 1

Where do we live?

Year 2

Where are we in place and time?

Year 3

What can we learn from the past?

Year 4

Year 5

How do we share the planet?

Year 6
