1. Fold three sets of three papers in half to create 3 books.

2. Use an awl to create three holes along the seam of each book at 1 ½”,4 ¼”, and one at 7”

3.Stack each book on top of the other and place them inside your cover.

4. Crease sketchbook cover gently at the seam.

5. Mark inner seam of the cover with three parallel holes that match your original three books.

6. Sew up your book.

Optional: Add a closure and/or decorate your cover

Pre-class:

- Take your abstract painting off of the drying rack and put it carefully in your portfolio

- Take out your work-in-progress sketchbooks

Objective: Finish sewing your sketchbooks to use for life drawing.

Road Map:

  • Select a needle and thread from the center of your table
  • Thread your needle (pinch, peek, pull) and tie a knot in the long end
  • Sew book #3 into your sketchbook
  • Start drawing if time allows

Sketchbook Exercise: Find an art material (pen, marker, paint bottle, glue bottle etc.) and draw it using pencil.

Tips for drawing from life:

1. Break objects into general shapes

2. Outline to define your object

3. Use shading to show which areas of your object are lighter or darker

4. Look closely at the texture of your subject. What marks can you make to represent this texture?

Still Life Requirements

  • Collaged paper in two colors, one darker one lighter.

  • At least three art materials
  • Part of your drawing should be in grayscale (either pen or pencil) and part of your drawing should be in color.

  • A horizon line and background to create an illusion of space.

  • Composition must be thoughtful

  • Your drawing should fill the page

Creating a Composition

Composition is the arrangement of elements within a work of art.

  1. Using your viewfinder frame find a composition that appeals to you.

  • Create a thumbnail sketch to help you plan out your larger drawing.

  • Sketch your final plan on 9 x 12” paper.

  • Collage on top of your drawing by cutting or tearing at least two hues of construction paper placing them thoughtfully into your composition.

  • Redraw lines you collaged over
