LUKE 8:4–15
The Parable
of the Sower
A sermon on hearing, receiving, and holding fast to the Word of God
1
PART ONE
The Parable
Let’s read verses 5–8.
4
SCRIPTURE
“
4 As a large crowd was gathering, and people were coming to Jesus from every town, he said in a parable, 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some seed fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky devoured it. 6 Other seed fell on the rock; when it grew up, it withered away, since it lacked moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8 Still other seed fell on good ground; when it grew up, it produced fruit: a hundred times what was sown.” As he said this, he called out, “Let anyone who has ears to hear listen.”

ON PARABLES
“
Parables both reveal and conceal truth: they reveal it to the genuine seeker who will take the trouble to dig beneath the surface and discover the meaning, but they conceal it from him who is content simply to listen to the story… Parables are a mine of information to those who are in earnest, but they are a judgment on the casual and careless.
Leon Morris - Luke: An Introduction and Commentary. Vol. 3. Tyndale New Testament Commentaries

PART TWO
The Explanation
Let’s look at Jesus’ explanation in verses 11–15.
9
SCRIPTURE
“
11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 The seed along the path are those who have heard and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and fall away in a time of testing. 14 As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit. 15 But the seed in the good ground—these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, produce fruit.”
Luke 8:11–15 · CSB
10
PART THREE
The Four Soils
In verses 12–15, Jesus names four soils, and how each receives the seed.
13
THE FOUR SOILS
A
The Wayside Soil
Verse 12
God’s Word is heard but doesn’t take root, because it’s snatched by the Devil. Belief doesn’t grow.
14
THE FOUR SOILS
B
The Rocky Soil
Verse 13
God’s Word is heard and initially received with an appearance of joy. But this is surface-level; the Word met a need, gave encouragement — yet as soon as temptation or testing arrives, it falls away.
15
THE FOUR SOILS
C
The Thorny Soil
Verse 14
There appears to be the start of belief. God’s Word is heard; life goes on — but this spiritual deposit can’t grow because it’s obstructed by “worries, riches, and pleasures of life.” It’s soon forgotten.
16
THE FOUR SOILS
D
The Good Soil
Verse 15
The seed goes into the ground, and it lasts. It produces fruit that endures to the end — the result the Lord wants to produce in all who claim faith in Christ.
17
PART FOUR
A Personal Reflection
Yes, I’m a Christian, a disciple. But what’s really the content of my heart?
18
1
The Devil and the Wayside Soil in Me
Do we know that Satan is at work to prevent believers and non-believers alike from understanding God’s Word?
19
Verse 12
SCRIPTURE
“
3 But if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case, the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2 Corinthians 4:3–4
20
PERSONAL REFLECTION ·
Pray for the Wayside Soil in Others
When disinterest, apathy, or rejection of the Word of God comes about in our lives, we need to recognize where it’s coming from — the pit of hell.
This is also what’s occurring with the loved one in your life who refuses to believe in Christ. The Devil has been snatching the Word from them too.
Action: Pray that God would remove deception from their sight, and that the seed of the Word would go down deep in their hearts — so that when you speak it, the Spirit awakens them to receive truth and life.
22
PERSONAL REFLECTION
2
Trial and Temptations and the Rocky Soil
Satan is at work, but it’s not all his doing. The Word of God also gets overshadowed by the ordinary testing of life and by temptation.
23
Verse 13
SCRIPTURE
“
No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
24
SCRIPTURE
“
12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you, as if something unusual were happening to you. 13 Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.
1 Peter 4:12-13
26
SCRIPTURE
“
“What is that to you? As for you, follow me.”
John 21:22
27
PERSONAL REFLECTION · 2
“The Trial Was Not Greater”
Are we willing to let God build that same resilience in us, or will we abandon the tried and tested Word of Christ when life gets difficult?
28
PERSONAL REFLECTION
3
The Cares of Life and the Thorns that Choke
God’s Word isn’t relegated to the gathering of the saints — it’s meant to be received amid our passions, responsibilities, our riches, and our worries. Yet it loses value when “good things” rob us of its fruit.
Verse 14
29
SCRIPTURE
“
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1 Timothy 6:10
30
SCRIPTURE
“
29 And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that your servants may speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand for healing, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.
Acts 4:29–30
32
PERSONAL REFLECTION · 3
Not Choked Out in Isolation
Friends, is your soil receiving the Word of God, or is it being torn away?
Perseverance in the Word is work, and the outcome God wants comes through daily faithfulness — and through mutual exhortation in community.
We must find the time to seek it out together, walking with people who’ll hold us accountable for fruit that lasts.
We cannot ignore the precious seed of the Word of God; He wants us to value it like the priceless treasure it is.
34
THE TURNING POINT
The Ultimate Question
So, this begs the ultimate point:
“How do we receive the seed of the Word of God in fertile soil, so that it is multiplied a hundredfold?”
35
THE ANSWER
E
The Good Heart that Grows in Good Soil
The answer is found in verse 15 – “But the seed in the good ground—these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, produce fruit.”
36
SCRIPTURE
“
But the seed in the good earth—these are the good-hearts who seize the Word and hold on no matter what, sticking with it until there’s a harvest.
Luke 8:15 · MSG
37
THE GOOD HEART
What Does That Look Like?
It starts with a good heart before God and four postures that bring forth what the Word calls us toward.
38
THE GOOD HEART · 1
1
It Listens
An honest and good heart is truly willing to listen to what God is saying. It listens. It weighs. It considers. It tests all things and holds fast to the good. It wants to hear from Him consistently through His Word.
1 Thessalonians 5:21
39
THE GOOD HEART · 2
2
It Chooses Humility
An honest and good heart makes choices in humility. It aligns itself with what is right rather than what is convenient, even when choosing the right requires perseverance. It surrenders in obedience, trusting that God’s ways are best.
Luke 8:15
40
THE GOOD HEART · 3
3
It Relies on God for Growth
Just as a farmer relies on God and prays for rain to produce growth from the newly planted seed, so we must rely on God. Ultimately, it is God who causes the growth.
1 Corinthians 3:6 · Hebrews 6:3
41
THE GOOD HEART · 4
4
It Trusts the Word Never Returns Void
The words of people will fail us, but God’s Word will not. We cannot give the final say to tradition, to the educated, to influencers, or even to family. God’s Word will last the test of time.
Isaiah 55:11
42
THE GOOD HEART
Hold On, and Endure
And from this posture, the Word of God can produce a hundredfold through two things: holding onto it, and enduring to produce fruit.
43
SCRIPTURE
“
If you love me, you will keep my commands.
John 14:15
44
SCRIPTURE
“
Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.
Galatians 6:9
45
IN CONCLUSION
Unsettled Till Jesus Comes
So where are you? What soil is currently being cultivated in your life? Will you let God’s Word be snatched, choked out, or wither away — or will you surrender to God’s Word, to learn, to walk in humility, to be dependent, and to grow?
46
PART FIVE
Application
Four questions to carry with you this week.
47
APPLICATION
1
Is God’s Word being snatched from your life? Pray that God will remove your blinders to see the deception at work in your life.
48
APPLICATION
2
Is God’s Word falling in value when you are tried and tempted? Memorize and meditate on Luke 9:23–26, and passages found1 Peter on standing firm through trials.
49
APPLICATION
3
Is God’s Word being choked out because we love the world more than we see the beauty of His Word? Repent of whatever has replaced the anchor of your life.
50
APPLICATION
4
Surrender our hearts for the seed to go and reap a harvest in our lives. Let’s fully give Christ our hearts, so a fertile soil can be transformed for His glory.
