God has made us perfect in HIs image. He has called our students to be designers, scientists and inventors. As we move into the next decade we don’t know what 21st century principles will apply, hence the need for us to be encouraging our students to become inquiry based learners, who feel empowered in their education to make a difference. I was the kind of student who loved school. I loved searching for the right answers and getting good marks. I was motivated by an artificial mindset that did not inspire creativity but rather conformity. However when I got to uni I realised that finding the right answer was not cool anymore. It was then I realised that I had learned a different motivational strategy and wished I had been exposed to design thinking in my early years. It takes creativity to ask the right question. The person who invented the Bumbo for babies knew I needed to communicate with my granddaughter. That person probably saw a niche and asked all the right questions from a million mums. What I love about this pic is not only the beautiful baby sitting in it but the power of relationship it generates. Every learning experience in my opinion should be about creating a new and different learning experience for our students.

Leonardo da Vinci was the Renaissance man, creative inventor, artist, sculptor, engineer, musician and mathematician. He used the power of imagination and observation and his inventions were ahead of his time. Perhaps he was the greatest maker of all time? As many of you know Piaget invented the theory of constructivism and the idea “To Understand is to Invent. As the child discovers what is important to his own needs, spontaneous research will lead to new learning created by the student and not imported from a teacher. Sugatra Mitra shared his famous hole in the wall experiment with students basically teaching and coaching their peers as they learned new concepts. Piaget also coined the term interdisciplinary learning where concepts are integrated into various disciplines ie art and science/lit. Piaget showed how students who are weak in math had a completely different attitude when integrated into other subject. Our school is using Lego Mindstorms to teach math and science to make abstract come alive. Piaget felt that all students should be capable of good math reasoning if a problem is exhibited in a concrete solution and action. John Dewey hated the industrial formula for schools and wrote about the critical role of community, democracy and wanted students to be involved in real world situations. Crafts, woodworking, weaving allow students to discover problems as they are actively engaged in their community or experience. We have work experience program at our school, an immersive tech program and also Makered open houses. This causes a thirst for knowledge and production of new ideas. Throw in tech and computers and now you can take data and mine it for more information.

Thinking skills for the future. This is an inverted Blooms taxonomy with creating at the beginning rather than the end. We want our students to imbibe critical thinking skills. Jobs of the future do not need scientists who have memorized the periodic table. Teaching facts and procedures is still rampant in all schools. Science is often taught with the end result being shared before the experiment has begun. We should not be teaching the theory first. It is a process of deliberate tinkering. Start with idea-you don’t have to plan out the whole map- and keep working through a series of prototypes. Imagine you are in a constant beta flux! Once you have a prototype test it. Or have an interactive design cycle where things are learned in spiral. Gone are the days where the teacher is the sage on the stage but more the guide on the side. We need to ask questions and learn what makes our students tick, and know. Help them document their evidence, become their studio manager to find tools and materials they might enjoy using, and guide your students inquiry towards big ideas without coercion. Encourage continuous improvement, and allow your students to solve problems their own way without getting in the way! Allow for reflection time

Maker Attitude

MAKE your Maker space! Gather your resources, gather your students, and explore. Some things need more structure and some do not. The space needs to have a little room to move--the rest is up to your imagination. Use what you have available. When a student is busy using their imagination they are seldom limited by the available space. Use this to your advantage!

Enhance your space with a “Maker Attitude”: foster excitement, inquisitiveness and design thinking. A love for creativity and imagination is built into us! Your imagination may be different than mine; however, given the space, time and materials, the “maker attitude” will ignite.

>>When we watch younger students, or students that have not been told “wait for instructions!” we see them just go for it! They learn by having fun and trying new things--even impossible things. This is where we learn to trust our students to think outside the “end-product” box and we learn along with them.

--something as simple as figuring out how K’nex connect, computing skills,or circuitry are initial discoveries that help to proceed with a project. Taking things apart is important to re-design. The digital world is as important as reading and writing and students will flow in and out of the digital world with tech as building material instead of an end in itself.

This student, Matthew, is deep in thought with the challenge: “How can you modify your design to make it go farther?”

Encourage the Maker to identify a problem and choose a modification to create a “fair test”; then interpret and communicate test results and keep using this cycle until satisfied. The design cycle does not use words like “broken”. Instead it uses words like “modify” and “re-invent”.

We learn to ask “How does it work?” “What does it do? What ELSE can it do?” Often we as adults have our imaginations stretched by our young Makers. :)
