It’s Here To Stay.Setting Expectations for Student AI Use

  • Regardless of what we allow or block on student on Chromebooks, they all have access on personal devices and we should assume that when crafting assignments.
  • Per policy, we must communicate in advance expectations for Generative AI use in writing on Schoology or within assignment directions.

22

Generative AI is allowed to assist with this assignment. If you use it for brainstorming or editing, disclose it. If you use it for phrasing, cite it using MLA standards. If your work is suspected to be completed by Generative AI and not yourself, you may be asked to verbally discuss your work.

AI Detectors

🤷‍♂️

  • Per policy, cannot be the only factor for determining cheating.
  • Focus on the core issue: plagiarism
  • Reliability of detectors is problematic
  • If you have suspicions, have a conversation to check for understanding

25

According to research from Stanford University released [in fall 2023], the proclivity for students to cheat has remained constant even with the introduction of AI. While their research shows that nearly 70% of students admit to cutting a corner at some point, that number is the same before the introduction of ChatGPT as it was after.

AI Am Irreplaceable

26

“No technology can ever replace the magic of a teacher, but when applied in deliberate and thoughtful ways, AI can help to augment their capacity — giving them time back to invest in themselves and their students.”
