Importance of Art on the Moon

  • The surface of the Moon is various shades of gray. To promote the mental health of the astronauts living on the moon or beyond colorful art would be beneficial. At a current cost of $1.2 a pound to bring anything to the moon, astronauts must create art only using recycled material such as clothing. This activity uses astronauts’ discarded T-shirts cut in strips and made into yarn. A HUNCH team at Olympia High School in Washington developed this project.

This is a How to make T-shirts into yarn video. The video demonstrates how to use finger knitting to make artistic items out of old T-shirts. The aim is to inspire astronauts to express themselves through knitted items while on the moon or beyond without bringing up even knitting needles!

This video is a great way to help even kindergarten students to learn to use their fingers to knit. Cutting up some of the students’ outgrown T-shirts would make a terrific gift for parents.
