  • Refer frequently to the band packet and website so that you are familiar with the details about each rehearsal and performance.
  • No one is authorized to write on the board or hang signs or posters without director approval.
  • Outside of our scheduled rehearsals, no one is authorized to use school rehearsal areas without director approval.
  • We do not have enough instruments for you to have a school instrument at home and another of the same instrument at school, except for tubas.
  • Do not be a clock-watcher, as our clocks are often wrong.
  • Daily goal: start on time, end on time.

Instruments & Equipment

  • Handle all instruments with the utmost care and respect.
  • School-owned instruments are in good working order when assigned to students.
  • If any instrument needs repair, including student-owned instruments, do not attempt to repair it yourself. Notify Mr. Rumbell or Mr. Kollipara IMMEDIATELY.
    • Explain the problem clearly and succinctly, and adult staff will work to correct the problem as time permits. Small problems can usually be solved quickly, but large problems may have to wait until a break or after rehearsal.
    • School-owned instruments in need of repair MUST be given to Mr. Rumbell or Mr. Kollipara since they are repaired by a school-authorized repair dealer.
    • Student-owned or rented instruments in need of repair must be repaired by a repair dealer or the school-authorized repair dealer at student/parent expense.
  • NEVER touch or use instruments that are not assigned to you. Even for a one-time tryout on an instrument, you must get permission from Mr. Rumbell.

Rehearsal Etiquette

  • Be on time by being early.
  • Appropriate warm-up for the day.
  • Music.
  • Marching.
  • Music and marching.
  • Rehearse like it’s the performance.
  • Never be afraid to make mistakes.
  • Complete attention and cooperation are required.
  • Expect and accept correction – it benefits the entire band.
  • Comments and actions by adult staff and student leadership are ONLY meant to correct – they are NEVER personal attacks.
  • Strive to make improvements every time – even just 1 note or 1 step.

16 of 22

  • Unless you are part of the student leadership, DO NOT correct other students during rehearsal. Adult staff and student leadership are constantly monitoring for areas of improvement.
  • Any problems with DMs, ADMs, Captains, or Section Leaders must be reported directly to Mr. Rumbell and Mr. Kollipara, ideally during a break or after rehearsal.
  • The rehearsal atmosphere is quiet attention, waiting for the next instruction.
  • The whistle is an important communication device: it STOPS EVERYTHING, including all instruction by adult staff and student leaders.
  • Everyone must respond to the whistle.

All-Weather Band

  • Hot or cold, cloudy or sunny, rain or snow…

we rehearse and we perform! We do not go

outside when there is lightning.

  • Appropriate attire may include:
    • Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
    • Jackets, coats, hats, gloves,

hand warmers, and rain gear.

  • DO NOT wear Crocs, sandals, flip-flops, boots, ballet flats, Converse, Vans, Keds, any shoes with heels over 1 inch, or the like. Incorrect footwear causes injury, fatigue, and incorrect marching style. Marching shoes are best.
  • The most important activity for band class is to perform in front of an audience. A band performance is the culmination of a series of learning units.
