VOCABULARY BEE

Round 1: Students will hear and see a vocabulary word and will give the English equivalent

Round 2: Students will hear and see a vocabulary word in English and will give the equivalent in the target language

Round 3: Students will play a “face-off” round against single opponents to see who can give the English meaning first until a final winner is decided

EXTEMPORANEOUS READING

Students read aloud a short passage in the target language that is unfamiliar to them.

They will have 1 min. to scan the passage before beginning to read the original text. Students will give a brief summary of the passage in English.

Students will be judged on pronunciation, intonation, fluency, confidence, and expression.

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING

Students will be given a topic to discuss from the published list of possible topics.

They will be asked to either describe their lives, describe others or tell a story that relates to the topic. Judges may ask questions of the students.

Students will be judged on their range of vocabulary, pronunciation, and expression.

POETRY RECITATION

Students will memorize a traditional poem in the target language.

They will recite this poem for a judge.

Students will be critiqued on their memorization, pronunciation, fluency, confidence, and expression.

ORIGINAL ART COMPETITION

Students may submit an original art entry no larger than standard poster size that reflects the festival theme for the year. See event description for details on acceptable entries.

Entries will be judged on adherence to theme, originality, quality, audience appeal, and cultural connections.

LIVE SKETCH COMPETITION

Students will create an original art sketch on site that reflects the festival theme for the year. See event description for more details.

Entries will be judged on adherence to theme, originality, quality, audience appeal, and cultural connections.

DIGITAL POSTER COMPETITION

Students will create a digital art piece that reflects the festival theme for the year. See event description for more details. Digital posters must be submitted prior to the live event.

CULTURE ESSAY COMPETITION

Students will write an original essay that reflects the festival theme for the year. Essays should be in English and not exceed 1000 words. See event description for more details.

CULTURE BOWL

Students are given a list of cultural trivia questions and answers to study. Responses must be given EXACTLY as they were on the original lists.

They may compete as a team in a series of Quiz-Bowl type matches, or they may compete as an individual in a digital quiz.

DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE

Skits are performed entirely in the target language and should not exceed 5 minutes. They must fit the prompt for their level and the competition theme and may include costumes or props.

Skits are judged on creative flair, memorization, stage presence, cultural/theme appropriateness, and audience appeal.

MUSICAL PERFORMANCE

Students can perform a vocal or instrumental work individually or in groups. The performance should not exceed 5 minutes and can be traditional or modern style.

Performances are judged on originality, technical skill, stage presence, cultural connections, and audience appeal.

DANCE PERFORMANCE

Students can perform a dance number individually or in groups. The performance should not exceed 5 minutes and can be a traditional or modern style.

CULTURE EXHIBIT

Students can create an exhibit, display or model in groups. The exhibit should reflect the cultural theme for this year.
