Note: This activity should be completed with physical objects, for example, toys, writing equipment, etc, as a more concrete learning activity. However, if this is not possible, you could use the ‘Counting and grouping objects’ teacher resource as an alternative.

Move the learners to table groups and scatter a set of 10 to 20 classroom objects on each table; the objects should be spread out and not grouped together. It may be useful to give each table the same number of objects to make it easier to see whether learners have counted the objects correctly.

Note: Throughout this lesson, learners will begin to understand how grouping objects can help them to organise counting. In order for learners to build this knowledge, they will first need to recognise the limitations of not grouping objects, before they move on to develop this skill. This is why objects should first be scattered across the table, as learners need to experience the challenge that this presents before they move them into groups.

Explain to learners that they are not allowed to move the objects for this activity. Tell them to count the total number of objects and note their answers (one answer per group) on a dry-erase whiteboard or scrap paper. Encourage learners to check their counting.

Explain that this time, learners need to sort the objects into groups, but they do not need to count them. Give learners some time to sort the objects on their tables.

Encourage learners to move them to separate spaces on the table to clearly demonstrate the three different groups.

Explorer task: Provide groups with the anomaly objects (or the objects on slide 4 of the ‘Counting and grouping objects’ teacher resource). Give learners some time to decide if the objects would fit into the groups that they have made. Discuss any misconceptions as a class.
