حدث ان اغلق أخ على نفسه باب قلايته زمانا يسيرا فقاتلته أفكار مكتومة وأحلام سمجة فبعث الى شيخ قديس يستشيره فى ذلك فأجابه الشيخ قائلاً : " ان كنت تريد ان تخلص ففر من شيطان العظمة واجعل لك قليل ..لأن المذلة تهلك العظمة وتبعدها ولا تدع احدا يخدمك بل اخدم أنت نفسك وانت تخلص بمعونة الله والآن فلا تغلق الباب الخشب بل بالحرى اغلق باب لسانك"

A monk shut himself up in his cell for a long time and was fought by thoughts and silly dreams, so he sent out to an elder saint to consult him. The elder replied: “If you wanted to be saved, escape the devil of pride and don’t keep lots of belongings for yourself, for humility destroys greatness and casts it away. Don’t let anyone serve you but rather serve yourself and you shall be saved by God’s support. And now, don’t shut your wooden door, but rather shut the door of your tongue.

قيل انه كان يوجد شيخ له تلميذ جيد ومن الملل كان الشيخ يخرجه خارج الباب ويزدرى به فكان التلميذ يمكث جالسا خارجا ولما فتح الشيخ الباب فى اليوم الثالث وجده جالساً فأدى له الشيخ مطانية وقال له : " يا ولدى ان تواضعك وطول آناتك قد غلبا شرى وصغر نفسى فهلم الآن الى الداخل ومنذ الآن كن انت الشيخ وانا التلميذ".

It was said that there was an elder who had a good disciple and out of boredom, the elder would kick him outside the door and humiliate him, yet the disciple would remain sitting outside. When the elder opened the door on the third day and found him sitting, he knelt down to him, saying: “My son, your humbleness and long-suffering have defeated my wickedness and low self esteem … please come inside and from now on, you become the elder and I the disciple.

أخبروا عن راهبين قديسين . كان أخوين وسكنا البرية، فحرص الشيطان على أن يفرق بينهما، ففى بعض الأيام أوقد الصغير منهما سراجاً ووضعه على منارة، وبحيلة من الشيطان وقع السراج وانطفأ ، فحينئذ حرد الكبير وضربه، فصنع الصغير له مطانية وقال له :

" لا تضجر يا أخى أطل روحك على وأنا أوقدها مرة أخرى "

There were two saint monks. They were brothers and lived in the wilderness. The devil made sure to separate them. One day, the younger one lit a lamp and placed it on a beacon but the devil dropped it and it was put off. The devil made the elder brother hit his young brother because of this. But the latter knelt down to his brother, saying: “Don’t lose patience my brother, I shall re-light it”

فلما أبصر الرب صبر الأخ ، عذب ذلك الشيطان إلى الصباح. ثم ذهب ذلك الشيطان فأخبر رئيس الجن بما كان ، وكان كاهن الأوثان ، الذى يخدمهم موجوداً، فلما سمع ذلك الكلام ، ترك كل شئ وآمن وترهب

When the Lord saw the patience of the young brother, He tortured this devil until the morning. This devil went to his master and informed him of what happened. The pagan priest who served them (the devils) was there and upon hearing the story, he left everything, converted, and became a monk.

ومن بدء رهبانيته ، كان يستعمل الإتضاع الكامل. وكان يقول : ”ان الاتضاع يقدر ان يقهر ويحل ويبطل كل قوة العدو وقد سمعتهم يقولون بعضهم لبعض : " انه كلما ألقينا السجس بين الرهبان نجدهم يتلقونه بالاتضاع ويعمل بعضهم لبعض مطانيات ، فكانوا بذلك يبطلون قوتنا .

Ever since the beginning of his monastic life, he abided by complete humbleness, and used to say: “Humbleness is capable of defeating and annulling every power of the enemy. I have heard them (the devils) telling each other: “Whenever we throw trouble in the way of the monks, we find them receiving it with humbleness and each one kneels down to the other, and by this they annulled our power”

يتكون الاتضاع من اعتبار الإنسان لنفسه أنه تراب ورماد بالفعل وليس بالكلام وحده. مار برصنوفيوس
