IS IT A FLUID?

the particles of a fluid must be able to move freely past each other in order to flow

    • the particles liquids and gases are able to flow past each other, so these are both fluids

MRSTAV

there are 3 PHASES OF MATTER

CLOUDS

The particles of air and water that make up these clouds slide past each other and allow them to flow.

KETCHUP

The particles of water and tomato in this ketchup slide past each other and flow into the cups.

SOLIDS DON’T FLOW

Some solids, like this salt, appear to flow when ground into fine powders. When we looks closely, we see that each grain has a definite shape.

RARE EXCEPTION

A glacier is a solid but it flows downhill very slowly, so it is one of the few solids that are also fluids.

TYPES OF FLOW

MRSTAV

13 of 18

LAMINAR FLOW

  • it allows fluids in pipes to move quickly and with more energy
  • when designing cars, boats and planes, we try to reduce the amount of drag so that flow is as laminar as possible
    • this makes the machines more efficient

is a smooth pattern of flow

TURBULENT FLOW

  • it occurs when the fluid flows around objects that disrupt the laminar flow pattern
  • it can create eddies, which are areas of slower moving fluid behind an obstacle

is an irregular, mixing pattern of flow
