Keys to Success

Grand Ledge High School Mathematics

  • Have a Growth mindset, a belief that your mathematical abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.

  • Have the Responsibility to take advantage of your resources.

  • Inquire: Ask questions, learn the “why” as well as the “how.”

  • Try: Put in the effort just like you do in sports, learning to play an instrument, or learning a new skill.

  • Put your phone away and keep it away until the end of class.

  • Keep all your math materials in one place (binder, folder, etc.).

  • Take notes daily. Then use them if/when you “get stuck” on homework.

  • Have a calculator of your own to use every day in class and at home. These can be borrowed from your teacher or rented from Ms. Westen (room 318) each trimester.

Classroom Expectations

4 of 13

  • Bring your textbook to class every day and have it open during every lesson.

  • Ask your teacher questions (during class, before school, or after school).

  • Weekly assignments are always listed on the board: take a picture of them or write them down in a planner. Be responsible for knowing what is going on each day in class.

Classroom Expectations

5 of 13

  • Expect to have homework on a daily basis.

  • Complete ALL homework and review assignments.

  • Whether your assignment is online or out of the book, you need to complete problems using paper and pencil! (In other words, you must show your work for online homework on a separate piece of paper.) Then be sure to label the assignment at the top of your paper.

  • Hit “TURN IT IN” when you are finished with an online assignment; otherwise you will not receive credit.

Homework Expectations

Key to Success

We can see that as students’ Overall Homework Grade (%) increases that their Marking Period Grade (%) tends to increase as well. We can also see that NO students who have a 90% or higher in Overall Homework Grade are failing their math class.

*Homework is graded on completion.

An increase of 1% in Overall HW Grade is associated with an increase in Marking Period Grade of roughly a ½%.

Key to Success

Students who challenged themselves to earn 80% correct or more on their review (rather than just completing it) tended to have higher assessment scores by an average of 17.5%.

Corrections are essential preparation!

  • AN ABSENCE IS NOT A FREE DAY OFF FROM MATH. TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO GET CAUGHT UP. You may need to spend time before school, after school, and/or during lunch to get caught up.

  • If you missed a set of notes: Get a copy from a classmate, ask your teacher for a copy (or know where your teacher keeps extra copies), or use the Math Help Room to get caught up.

  • If you missed a quiz or test: Make it up ASAP!
