CHAPTER 1: DAVID HEARS OF SAUL’S DEATH

  • A messenger comes from the war between the Israelites and Philistines and reports that Saul has been killed, and brings David Saul’s crown.
  • David ask him how he knows this, and the Messenger reports that it is he who killed him on orders from Saul.
  • David then kills the messenger for killing Saul.
  • David then sings a song mourning the Deaths of Saul and his son Jonathon.

CHAPTER 2: WAR BETWEEN DAVID AND SAUL

  • The Lord commands David to go up to Judah. There he is anointed and chosen to be king over Judah.
  • Meanwhile Saul’s son Ish-bosheth is anointed and chosen to be King over the rest of Israel.
  • One day some of the men of David led by Joab, and some of the Men of Ish-Bosheth led by Abner are bathing at the same pool, when they decide to fight.
  • The fight becomes a battle and David’s men defeat Ish-bo-sheth’s.

CHAPTER 3: ABNER BETRAYS SAUL

  • After the war ended the house of Saul had become very weak.
  • One day Ish-bosheth accused Abner of sleeping with his father’s concubine. Abner became angry over this accusation and decided to betray Ish-bosheth and join David.
  • David demand one thing from Abner, and that is that he brings Michal Saul’s daughter with him who Saul had betrothed him too. David sends messengers to Ish-bosheth in order to help persuade him to release Michal.
  • Abner begins to petition other Israelites to switch sides. He goes to David to seek his approval, which David gives. Abner then leaves.
  • Joab then finds out that David has consulted with Abner, and believes Abner is tricking him in attempt to gain intelligence. Joab then tracks down Abner and kills him.
  • David then curses Joab’s family with leprosy and mourns the death of Abner.

CHAPTER 4: ISH-BOSHETH

  • Two men named Banaah and Recab who were leaders of Ish-bo-sheth raiding bands decide to murder Ish-bo-sheth.
  • They sneak into his house while he taking a mid day nap and stab him to death, and then cut off his head.
  • Banaah and Recab then take the head to Daivd and present it to him. David rebukes them explaining did you hear what I did to one who murder Saul.
  • David then kills them.

CHAPTER 5: DAVID BECOMES KING

  • After the death of Ish-bosheth the elders of Israel crown David king over Israel.
  • David then conquers Jerusalem.
  • Hiram King of Tyre sends cedar logs to David to build a palace.
  • The Philistines then attack Israel after hearing the news that David is now King. David defeats them.

CHAPTER 6: THE ARK BROUGHT TO JERUSALEM

  • David assembles a group of Israelites to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem.
  • On the way the Ark is passing over rough terrain and the oxen pulling it stumble. A man named Uzzah takes hold of the Ark of God to keep it from falling, and the Lord strikes him down.
  • David is angry at this and decides not to take it all the way to Jerusalem, but instead takes it a house owned Obed-Edom who lives near by.
  • Later David hears the house of Obed-Edom has been blessed, and then goes to retrieve the Ark and bring it to Jerusalem.
  • When he returns to Jerusalem he is celebrating , but Saul’s daughter Michal his wife is jealous.

CHAPTER 7: THE LORD’S PROMISE TO DAVID

  • In the house of David there is a prophet named Nathan that David trusts. David is concerned that he lives in a house while the Ark is kept in a tent and tell this to Nathan.
  • One night the Lord speaks to Nathan and tells him that he wonders if David will build him a house to dwell in. He then tells Nathan that David’s offspring will succeed him and that his son will be the one to build him a house.
  • Nathan relays this information to David. Then David prays to the Lord, and praises him.

CHAPTER 8: DAVID’S VICTORIES

  • After this David led the Israelites into many battles, and was victorious every time.

CHAPTER 9: DAVID AND MEPHIBOSHETH

  • David calls on a servant who worked in Saul’s house. He asks the servant if there is anyone left from Saul’s family who he can show kindness to for the sake of Saul’s son Jonathon.
  • The servant tells David Jonathon has a son named Mephibosheth who is still alive.
  • Mephibosheth who is crippled is sent for by David. David gives Mephibosheth everything that belonged to Saul, and promises him he is always welcome at his table.

CHAPTER 10: DAVID DEFEATS THE AMMONITES

  • In the course of time the King of the Ammonites had died and his son Hanun succeeded him. David decided to send a delegation to express his sympathy.
  • When the delegation arrived Hanun believed them to be spies, so he had his men assault them by cutting holes in their pants and cutting off their beards.
  • Once David heard what happened, the Ammonites realized they had become a stench in David’s nostrils, so they assembled an army to attack Israel.
  • David then assembled an army to counter their attack, and defeated the Ammonite forces.

CHAPTER 11: DAVID AND BATHSHEBA

  • One evening while David’s army is at war, he is walking around the roof when he sees a women bathing. David realizes she is the wife of his servant named Uriah who is in the army. He then has his messengers bring him to the palace and he has sex with her, and she becomes pregnant.
  • David instruct Joab his General to send Uriah to him. When Uriah came to David, David questioned him. Then David sent him home to his wife, but he would not go out of respect for his fellow soldiers.
  • Then David has him sent back to the Army. He instructs his general to put Uriah in the front line where the fighting is fiercest in order so he will be killed. Uriah dies soon after.
  • His wife Bathsheba mourns him, and the marries David.

CHAPTER 12: NATHAN REBUKES DAVID

  • The prophet Nathan comes to David’s house and tells him a parable about a rich man and a poor man. The rich man is so greedy when a visitor comes to him he wont sacrifice any of his own livestock but takes the single lamb that the poor man has and prepares it. This makes David mad.
  • Nathan then explains that David is this rich man, and the lamb represents Bathsheba Uriah’s wife.
  • Nathan the explains that David will be punished by the Lord, and the Lord will kill one of his offspring.
  • Soon after David and Bathsheba’s child gets sick and dies.
  • Soon after this David and Bathsheba have a son and name him Solomon.
  • David then assembles an army an conquers the Ammonites.

CHAPTER 13: AMNON AND TAMAR

  • One of David’s sons Amnon is in love with his daughter Tamar.
  • One day Amnon pretends to be sick and his father David to send Tamar to tend to him. Once Tamar is there alone with him, he tries to have sax with her. Tamar rebukes Amnon so then Amnon rapes her. After this he sends her away.
  • One of David’s other sons Absalom finds out about what happened, as well as David and they are angry. Absalom never confronts but holds a grudge against him.
  • A few years later Absalom invites his father and officials to an event. When they decline, Absalom requests that Amon attends. David approves.
  • While at the events Absalom has Amnon killed, he then flees to Geshur and stays for several years.

CHAPTER 14: ABSALOM RETURNS TO JERUSALEM

  • Joab knowing David misses his son devises a plan to bring Absalom back. He bring a wise women to David to consult him.
  • The wise women tell David she has two sons that have fought each other and one has killed the other. She says that the people seek to kill the son that survived as retribution for his deeds. She pleas David to intervene since he is the only child she has left. David says he will do this.
  • After this the women accuses David of hypocrisy claiming he will forgive her son but not his own, in this she refers to Absalom’s banishment. David then realizes she was sent by Joab. David then agrees to bring Absalom back.
  • Once Absalom is back the King still will not seem him for a few years. Eventually in order to the Kings attention Absalom burns Joab’s crop, after this Joab brings Absalom to the king.

CHAPTER 15: ABSALOM’S CONSPIRACY

  • Absalom conspires to over throw David. In order to do so he assembles a group of men to help him intercept anyone who is coming to Jerusalem to see David. Whenever a messenger comes to see David Absalom tells them he is not seeing anyone right now, but if he was was the King he would always have time to see them.
  • After four years of this Absalom asks David if he can travel to Hebron. David approves. From here Absalom implements his overthrow of David.
  • David sends out messengers throughout Israel instructing the people to proclaim him as King.
  • David hears of Absalom’s plot and flees Jerusalem with a contingent of followers fearing he will be killed. David travels to the mountain of Olives. From here sends a spy named Hushai back to Jerusalem to report on Absalom’s activities.
  • He also prays the that Absalom’s councilor Ahithophel will give bad advice.

CHAPTER 16: DAVID’S SPIES.

  • Davis speaks to a man named Ziba, who gives supplies to David. David then blesses him.
  • David is harassed by a man named Shimei. David does not retaliate.
  • When David’s spies reach Jerusalem Absalom question theirs allegiances. Absalom then ask his councilor Ahithophel for advice.
  • Just as David prayed in the previous chapter, Ahithophel gives Absalom bad advice.

CHAPTER 17: ADVICE TO ABSALOM

  • Ahithophel advises Absalom to go to war with David immediately. Absalom then goes to seek a second opinion from Hushai who is David’s spy. Hushai advises that he should first assemble a larger before attacking David. Absalom decides to follow Hushai’s advice.
  • Hushai then warns David about the plans.
  • Ahithophel commits suicide when realizes his advice was not followed.

CHAPTER 18: ABSALOM DIES

  • David assembles an army to march against the Israelites. The Israelites are defeated.
  • During the battle Absalom is riding a mule. The mule then runs under a tree. Absalom gets caught in the branches as the mule runs out from underneath him. Absalom is then stuck hanging there. Joab then kills him.
  • A messenger is then sent to David to tell him the news. When David hears the news he mourns over the death of his Son.

CHAPTER 19: DAVID RETURNS TO JERUSALEM

  • As David mourns many of his troops become sad.
  • Joab comes to David and rebukes him telling him that his troops feel unappreciated after they have won the battle for him and that they might desert him.
  • David returns to Jerusalem.
  • The Israelites and the Judahites begin to quarrel because the Israelites ee David favoring the Judahites.

CHAPTER 20: SHEBA REBELS

  • One Israelite named Sheba incites a rebellion.
  • The Israelites follow him and desert David, while the Judahites stayed with David.
  • Joab then gathers the army and pursues Sheba and find him in a city called Abel Beth Maacah. Here a wise woman comes out to Joab and pleads him not siege the city. Joab tell hers if she cuts off Sheba’s head and brings it to him he will spare the city.
  • The woman then went to her people with Joab’s instructions. The people of Abel Beth Maacah then cut off Sheba’s head and delivered it to Joab.

CHAPTER 21: GIBEONITES ARE AVENGED

  • A famine plagues Israel. David councils the Lord about why this happening and the Lord tells David it is due to the way Saul treated the Gibeonites.
  • David summons the Gibeonites in order to make amends. The Gibeonites demanded that seven of Saul’s male descendants be put to death. David fulfilled these demands.
  • The Israelites then went to several more wars with the Philistines.

CHAPTER 22: DAVID’S SONG

  • David sings a song of praise for the Lord.

CHAPTER 23: DAVID’S LAST WORDS

  • David makes a speech, and honors the men who have fought with him over the years.

CHAPTER 24: THE LORD SENDS A PLAGUE

  • The Lord is angry with Israel, and he orders David to take a census and enlist men in the military.
  • The Lord then came to a prophet named Gad and instructs him to tell David he must choose between three curses for his people, a famine, being conquered by your enemies, or a plague. David chooses a plague.
  • When David sees the plague killing his people he begs for mercy from the Lord. Gad instructs him to go build an altar in the house of Araunah the Jebusite.
