This routine was inspired by Christopher Danielson who wrote the book How Many?

Here is Stenhouse’s description of the Teacher Guide:

Throughout, he shares stories and excerpts from real classrooms where he facilitated How Many? discussions. Danielson helps teachers anticipate what students might notice and gives practical suggestions for facilitating rich conversations with students. In this routine students are shown a photograph that includes many opportunities for counting. Students consider different ways to count the different sets that appear in the picture. For example, they might count a set of red objects, a set of green objects and a set of yellow objects.
