Reading

What we will learn

8th grade Reading will focus on the following content areas:

  • short stories and foundational skills practice
  • application of reading skills and strategies in novel units
  • vocabulary word study
  • small group discussion strategies ("book clubs")
  • reading response and comprehension

In addition to the St. Paul Jr. High policies, I ask the following of my students:

1. If you choose to be anything, be kind: to yourself, others, and your teachers.

2. Come to class with a positive attitude and ready to learn!

3. You are free to make the choice; however, you are not free from the consequence of the

choice (positive or negative).

4. Do your work (in class or at home) with quality and efficiency.

5. Respect our rules, procedures, classmates, school, and teachers at all times.

Classwork:

  • story/novel reading
  • reading response/discussion

What will assessments look like?

In addition to non-graded progress checks (for my instructional use

only), students will be assessed by:

  • short story quizzes/tests
  • novel quizzes/tests
  • monthly STAR tests (for progress)
  • story/novel projects

Homework:

Homework will be a combination of the following:

  • story/novel questions/response
  • spelling unit assignment
  • Accelerated Reader progress
  • IXL assignments

  • assessment resources, study guides, helpful handouts, practice games, etc.

  • class announcements, policy changes, schedule changes, etc.

Grades will be updated weekly(except in the cases of writing projects, missing/incomplete assignments or at the end of a quarter/semester.
