About UMEC

  • Created in 1997 by H.B.141
    • This legislation authorized the UMEC to conduct ongoing health care workforce analyses and to assess Utah’s training capacity and graduate medical education (GME) financing policies.
      • “Advise the State Board of Regents and the Legislature on the status and needs of health care professionals in training”
      • “conduct surveys…, to assess and meet changing market and education needs”
      • “appoint advisory committees of broad representation on interdisciplinary clinical education, workforce mix planning and projections, funding mechanisms, and other topics as is necessary”
      • 2014- Appointed as Utah’s Nursing Workforce Information Center.

Project Description

      • Used to inform nursing policy makers on nursing education in the state.
        • data collected since 2006
          • This project uses 2016-2017 data. Previous years will be pulled in later.
  • DW design will be used as a prototype
    • 30+ siloed data sets on all medical professions in the state to be integrated and standardized for improved analytics capabilities

Need for Data Warehouse

  • Growth of professions analyzed from only physicians in the beginning to currently 15 different professions

  • Difficulty to manually analyze growing amount of data

  • UMEC data being used by more entities and for new purposes not originally anticipated.

  • 20 Nursing institutions across the state
    • Public/ private institutions all participated
    • Multiple programs within each institution
      • (LPN, Associates, Bachelors, Masters, PhD etc…)
  • 2 years of data
    • ALC has data back to 2006
      • Past data is more incomplete, further integration as a next step
