An Overview of the Silk Road

  • The Silk Road was a network of trade routes that connected China to other parts of Asia and the west.

  • Over 4,000 miles long

  • Opened by the Han Dynasty in 130 BCE; closed in 1453 CE

  • While the Silk Road transported goods, it also spread technology, religion, art, language, new ideas, and diseases.

3 of 50

Why Silk?

  • Silk was a luxury item around the world, but no one knew how to make it, besides the Chinese.
    • This demand made silk very valuable and expensive.

  • To keep production secret, it was against the law (and punishable by death) to smuggle silkworms and their eggs outside of China.
    • Eventually, other groups stole silkworms to start their own silk industry.

  • Silk is made from the cocoons of silkworms.
    • 3,000 silkworms are killed to make one pound of silk, usually by being boiled or baked to kill the worms.

Simulation Rules

  • To learn about the Silk Road, you will be participating in a game-based simulation. Each decision you make during the simulation has the potential to gain or lose points.

  • This game does not work if you work ahead. Each round there are new twists, so you must follow your teacher’s directions closely.

  • Even though this is a game and will get competitive, we still must be respectful and follow all of our normal class procedures.
