Formation of the Present Progressive

We form the Present Progressive with the verb ‘be’ (am/ is/ are) + verb(ing)

+ He is singing.

-We aren’t running.

When do we use the Present Progressive?

1. For actions that are happening at the time of speaking (now):

  • Sherry is watching a film on TV at the moment.

2. For actions that are happening at present, but not necessarily at the moment of speaking:

  • I am learning Spanish.
  • Rob is looking for a new job.

3. For a future arrangement:

  • I am going to visit my friends tomorrow.

  • feel, hear, see, taste

Emotions = no …ing:

  • like, dislike, love, hate, fear, want, wish, need, prefer

Verbs of thought and knowledge = no …ing:

  • know., mean, understand, think, believe, guess, remember, forget

Other verbs = no ….ing:

  • own, belong to, cost, weigh, seem, appear

When do we use the Present Simple?�We use it to talk about:

1. Repeated actions/ Routines = things that happen or are done again and again.

  • I wake up every morning at 6 am.
  • I usually do my homework when I get home.

2. General truths:

  • The sun rises in the east.
  • Tomorrow is ____________.

3. For permanent states = Things that are not temporary.

  • I live in Taipei City.
  • I love my mom.
