2018 Methods vs 2024 Methods

Issue

2018 SFM methods

2024 SFM methods (DRAFT under development)

Abatement calculation tool

Savanna Burning Abatement Tool (SavBAT version 3)

Use new SavCAM tool which integrates FullCAM, ensuring better alignment with Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory

Carbon pools used in the sequestration method

Only dead wood on the ground

Carbon pools expanded to include standing dead wood and living biomass

Treatment of weed species

By the end of the current reporting period, Relevant weed species must be removed from the project area or the area affected must be removed from the project area

More flexible approach, allowing 18 months to treat the weed affected area subject to annual follow-up treatment until the weed is eradicated

Baseline period

10-15 years depending on the project

NAFI fire scar data supports use of a 20 year baseline, allowing more accurate modelling of fire history and abatement calculations. Transferring projects could opt in to the new 20 year baseline

Capacity building fire management

Not accommodated

New projects allowed max of 6 years to undertake capacity building fire management without affecting project baseline period

Vegetation types

-

Retain existing vegetation types. A new eligible vegetation type, pindan, (Acacia sp. Shrublands, low rainfall zone) included
