It does not matter if a school system wins many basketball games if its students cannot read.

How do inputs, outputs, and outcomes apply to school system?

What are some examples of school district inputs – what must we have in place before the school year begins?

�Yes, the superintendent and teachers are an input, the curriculum is an input, and budgets are an input.

�These are resources and activities invested in a particular program, process, or strategy; usually knowable at the beginning of a cycle, they are known before the student even starts the school year.

�(Note: teachers are the most critical input!)

�When is the school district's halftime? If the game starts at the beginning of the year and ends on the last day of instruction, when is halftime?

�What are some examples of outputs at halftime?

Yes, benchmark assessments, classroom assessments, or other tests are outputs, attendance is an output, discipline rates are output, and financial updates are an output.

�These are all the results of a particular set of inputs and are usually knowable in the midst of a cycle.

�When do we know the school system outcomes for the year?

�Wait for responses.

�Yes, school system outcomes are knowable at the end of each school year. This could include student performance on the North Dakota Student Assessment, final budget audit, or final student attendance rate.

��Let’s add the next layer: distinguishing between “other outcomes” and “student outcomes.”

�What might be an example of an outcome in a school system that is not a student outcome?”

� Yes, an other outcome can be just about any school system,

� but a student outcome is a measure of what students know or are able to do.

�Anything that is not related to what students know and are able to do is considered an ‘other outcome’ (usually associated with adult behaviors, not student behaviors).

Why do we need goals?

SCHOOL BOARDS MATTER

Vision: School board writes and adopts student outcome goals, in collaboration with the superintendent

Monitoring: Superintendent writes goal progress measures in collaboration with the school board; the school board monitors student outcome goals using a monitoring calendar and report.

Values: School board identifies guardrails/constraints for the superintendent and the school board.

Research tells us….

This is relatively new research in terms of board behaviors impacting student outcomes.

We have 20-30 years of research related to teacher behaviors and administrative behaviors to improve student outcomes,

but the research on board behaviors has been available for only about ten years.

Even though removed from the classroom, three board behaviors allow school board members to positively influence student outcomes.

These include

1. working collaboratively with the superintendent to develop student outcome goals

2. working collaboratively with the superintendent to monitor student outcome goals.

3. provide the superintendent and the board with guardrail actions regarding the achievement of student outcome goals, and

Often, when school systems are asked about their goals, they respond, “Sure, we have goals; we have one centered on:

1. Finances (adult behaviors)

2. Facilities (adult behaviors)

3. Teachers (adults behaviors)

4. Parents (adult behaviors)

Then there is that one goal that says students will do good.
