HOW TO USE THE COURSE CURRICULUM GUIDE

The Curriculum Guide should be used to learn about course descriptions, prerequisites and grade level restrictions.

This Guide can also be used to review and learn about Graduation Requirements, NCAA links and Special Programs.

Course requirements are mandatory. Please be sure to pay attention to them when scheduling. If a student chooses a course they do not have the prerequisites for the student will be removed and placed in another class.

Questions about what courses you should take? Ask your current teacher in that subject area!

Course Registration Timeline

February 4th: All students receive Course Selection Instructions in Cougar Hour.

February: Students will submit course requests in XELLO. Please be sure to include alternate course requests. Consult with your teachers about specific subject area placements.

DUE Date: Friday, February 28th. Failure to complete course requests by this date will result in the computer selecting your courses for you!

May 17th: Test Out Application due date (must be submitted to Ms. Munger) Test Out Exam Dates June 11th - 13th

Schedule Change Policy

Staffing is predicted and schedules are created based upon student class requests. Any schedule changes at the beginning of the school year or throughout the school year will be considered for the following reasons:

· A course needs to be added to fulfill a graduation requirement.

· A course has already been taken and cannot be repeated.

· A course needs to be retaken due to failure.

· A student has been placed into a course for which they have not met

the prerequisites, or grade level allowed.

Schedule changes will not be made for teacher preference, lunch preference or friend preference.

DUAL ENROLLMENT

All students must follow the Dual Enrollment Process in order to apply for a Dual Enrollment Course.

Students that fail to do so will not be considered for Dual Enrollment next fall.

The Dual Enrollment Process must be completed by May 1st in order to be considered.

Credit Recovery

  • If you failed a mandatory course for graduation you will need credit recovery. Summer school is no longer offered at SLCS

In order to retake these courses in Xello, it will require an override by your counselor.

Testing Out

  • Option for all students
  • Pass/fail credit. Does not affect GPA.
  • A score of at least 78% is required on the course assessment for credit to be granted for that course.
  • Test out exam offered twice a year (January & June)
  • Turn in testing out application to Student Services by May 16th
  • Next test out window: June11-13

  • College admission representatives want to see students continue to challenge themselves academically for all 4 years of high school.

  • Challenge yourself to take advanced coursework if it’s appropriate

  • Find out the average GPA for some of your top colleges choices and set a goal for yourself.

  • Taking the bare minimum will not impress college admission representatives.

OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER

  • Questions about class choices? See your teacher in that subject area. They can help to place you!
  • AP Courses (Advanced Placement) are equivalent to entry level college courses. All Ap courses have prerequisites, please be sure to refer to the Curriculum Guide for them.
  • ATTENTION SENIORS!!! You are responsible for making sure your course selections are acceptable for the college of your choice. Call the colleges admissions office for verification as many colleges requires different courses.

Playing College Sports?

The NCAA requires a student to register themselves on the eligibility center website by the end of junior year.The NCAA registration has a fee when registering and should be done with a parent/ guardian. If you have questions about eligibility, please contact your current coach and the coach or NCAA Eligibility office at the university you are interested in.

Must have a 2.3 or higher GPA
