The other thing you received in your data packet was a colored chart with numbers. This chart has the target for each grade at each point in the year. (Those are the numbers in the GREEN column.) Let’s practice reading the chart together: which two grades are represented on this slide? (2nd & 3rd) In 3rd grade, what’s the number they should score at the end of the year to be considered on level? (any number between 503-516.9) What if your child is above 516? (They are considered “advanced”.) In front of the colored chart you got a number with “PL” in front of it. That tells you what colored column your child’s score falls in. For example, if the number after PL is “1” your child’s score is in the red column. Meaning that your child is currently very below grade level. If there is a “2” after the “PL”, your child’s score is in the yellow column. Your child is almost at grade level. A “3” means “at”, 4 = “above.” Look at the actual number to see how close your child is to the next band.

Literacy Story of Now

Hello everyone, my name is Thania, I have 2 students at Lazear, one in third grade and a sixth grader. I am a new mom at Lazear. The reason I joined this institute is because I wanted to get more involved in my child's learning and how they can become better readers. My child, Barbara Sanchez who is in 3rd grade scored as PL3:499 which is considered low risk. Even though she is considered low risk, my child is still an English learner and didn’t score out of the ELPAC exam when she had finished 2nd grade at her old school. My literacy goal for her this year is for her to pass the ELPAC and get reclassified by the end of third grade. Although she can understand what people are saying, she still needs support in understanding what she is reading and writing in English. As a parent, it is important for us to connect with more parents who may not know what is going on or even know that there are levels or tests given to measure students abilities. Especially for families that don’t speak english. Many parents just drop their kids off at school and don’t realize how they can support their child at home. By hosting workshops that are language accessible and building relationships with other parents, we as parent leaders have to do our part and support other parents at the school. We need to be a well rounded community and not only just plan fun events- but also spread the urgency of how we need to support our students.

EFC Leading the Way in OUSD to Reading Proficiency

Strategy 2: Family Academic Partnership Team

Why are we adopting a team structure for Family Academic Partnership? Different roles bring diverse experience, expertise and insights. For example, a Lead Admin may be able to navigate how to work with school-wide communication systems to foster family partnership, teacher leaders may bring insights on literacy strategies and data, family coordinators can leverage their experience leading a variety of family partnership structures and a parent leader would be able to contribute their outreach skills and relationships with parents in their grade level.

This team approach builds shared vision and capacity for family academic partnership across multiple roles, contributing to sustainability and impact through shared responsibilities.

Home-School Collaboration

Home-school collaboration is essential to getting students to grade level.	1. Meet with your child’s teacher to make a plan. You don’t need to wait for conferences. What will the teacher do? What can you practice at home? What growth should we see?
You are not alone! Find a partner like the Family Coordinator to be your buddy.	2. Check on your child’s reading data every month.
