About the teacher

I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2017 and lived and worked in California for the three years following. In 2020 I moved back to North Carolina to pursue teaching as a career by obtaining my teaching certificate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I started teaching in 2021 during the Covid-19 Pandemic at a large Elementary school (800+ kids!) and stayed for the next three years.

At my previous school I incorporated core learning standards into the Art curriculum, which I will continue to do here at CRGE. Typically projects will align with what students are learning in their classroom.

Teaching is my passion and I love helping students explore all different kinds of art mediums. In Elementary, students are like sponges with boundless creativity. My hope is to introduce them to something in these early years that sparks their curiosity and passion for not only art but also the world around them.

Social Emotional Learning

For the beginning of the year, we are focusing on how to follow classroom expectations, using supplies safely, staying in our area and using positive language/behaviors with our classmates.

Students will practice how to communicate ideas effectively with their classmates and build community through a shared task and/or proximity while learning. Student engagement and participation is important for their social development as much as artistic, so that is a priority for us in class.

Class Expectations

I am walking TK through classroom expectations and procedures. Their lessons are focused on the principles and elements of Art and we go through them one at a time.

So far we have studied lines, made textured leaf rubbings, and drawn shapes. Next up we are tackling colors!

4th

4th graders are creating manuscript style artwork of letters with patterned sections.

This year 4th graders are learning about medieval times, so I am introducing them to medieval art as well. We discuss manuscript artwork and the roles of artists and writers in this time period. For their project, we are using a meditative art technique called “Zentangles” which was developed by a former monk.

5th

5th graders are studying the Aztec in ELA, so we are looking at some art made by the Huichol people in Mexico. The Huichol are descended from the Aztec and make beautiful fiber and beaded artwork.

Ojos de Dios, or “Gods’ Eye” are made by the Huichol. Students are making their own Ojo de Dio in class while learning about fiber arts and related techniques. In addition, we learn about Mexico, focusing on the region in which the Huichol live.
