Math + Language

Increasing Oral Language Fluency Through Math Games

Why games?

• They provide a fun opportunity for your family to spend time together while at the same time practicing important skills
• Kids learn better when they are engaged and excited about what they’re doing
• Games provide opportunities for repeated practice of skills rather than just 1-10 questions on a math worksheet
• Most games can be simplified to play with younger siblings or extended to make them more challenging

Example: Supera el número

Materials: 2 dice, 2 recording sheets or blank paper

Instructions: Player 1 tosses both dice and records the numbers. He will cross out the number that is less and toss just that dice again. He will then record the third number and add together the remaining numbers on his sheet. Player 2 will then follow the same steps above. Whichever player has the largest sum wins the round.

Variations

Simplified versions

• Use 2 dice, and simply add the two numbers together
• Have each person toss one of the dice, and whoever has the higher number wins

Variations

Challenging Versions

• Add more dice. Students can add 3+ numbers together
• Roll 2 dice and double or triple that number to compete
• Roll 2 dice. Subtract the smaller from the greater. The difference is what you then use to compete.
• Roll 2 or more dice, and use half of the number to compete
• Set a top limit. Students can take the chance to roll one again, but if they hit the limit, they have gone overboard. (Think kid-friendly Blackjack!)
• Create teams and make it a family competition
