Reading Introduction

For the first implementation:

  • Welcome children to Reading.
  • Set the message board in front of the children.
  • Read the message aloud.
  • Show children the related vocabulary picture cards.
  • Respond and expand on children’s comments related to the message or picture card.
  • Give children some contextual information to understand the story. Think of this as a story preview.

Reading Introduction

For the second implementation:

  • Welcome children to Reading.
  • Remind children of the core storybook using a few target vocabulary words.
  • Set the message board in front of the children.
  • Read the message aloud.
  • Support children’s range of abilities to respond by repeating, clarifying, and extending children’s responses.

    • Review the title and names of the author and illustrator.
    • Review what an author and illustrator do when it comes to making a book
    • Make a few comments related to the cover:
      • Introduce the characters
      • Situate the story in its setting
      • State the story’s problem
      • Make a comment that inspires curiosity and leads right into the reading

  • Consider how you would discuss the cover of the storybook with children.

  • Start by mentioning the title (The Twins’ Blanket)
  • Make it known that Hyewon Yum is both the author and illustrator
    • “She wrote all the words and drew all the pictures!”
  • Talk about the girls pictured on the cover
  • Discuss how they look the same and tie it into the definition of twins
  • Introduce the story problem
    • “The twins are sharing a blanket, but what do you think will happen when they grow up?

Introduce the second read:

    • Acknowledge children’s familiarity with the story, and remind them of the title, author and illustrator.
    • Briefly review the story’s problem and mention a critical event.
    • Explain children’s role in the reading (e.g. “Today you are going to help tell the story.”).

Begin reconstructing the story:

    • Summarize or read part of the text to start the conversation
    • Ask a few questions to prompt children to connect events and causes or to infer characters’ motivation:
      • “I remember this part, it’s when….
      • “What’s happening here?”
      • “Why did this happen?
      • “How is ____ feeling right now?”
    • Clarify and extend children’s comments.
    • Add more verbal explanations for target vocabulary.

    • Generate prompts and ideas for deepening children’s understanding of vocabulary, characters’ feelings, and the events of the story during Read to Reconstruct.

  • Reading extension happens after Reading for Enjoyment and Reading to Reconstruct
  • Reading extension involves using supplied story props that will be located in your Corps Member bag to extend reading comprehension
