Renewable energies and green solutions in Lithuania

Goals

  • For 2030: over 50% of Lithuania's energy needs to be produced from wind power, rest from sunlight - 22%, from biofuels - 16%, from hydropower – 8%, from biogas - 1%.
  • For 2050: climate neutrality, zero CO2 emissions

Hydropower

  • Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant
  • Built in 1960 on Nemunas riverbed
  •  the largest hydropower station in Lithuania, uses renewable energy resources, as well protects the Kaunas city from spring floods

  • Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant
  • Built in 1978
  • Located 34 km away from Kaunas
  • Balances electricity production and consumption, prevents accidents in Lithuanian electricity system

Solar power

  • Solar panels are gaining popularity because of financial support from Lithuanian government
  • Lithuania has 1,580 small solar power plants with a total installed capacity of 59.4 MW but more are to be installed soon.

Wind energy

  • Conditions for the development of wind energy in Lithuania are favorable. Lithuania is a country of plains, which is means that there are no natural barriers that can block the wind

  • There are 23 wind farms in the country with a combined capacity of 480 MW
  • wind farms can already supply 634 thousand households or needs of 1.3 million people.

Fusion energy

  • EUROfusion consortium researchers - 4,800 experts, students and staff from all over Europe, including Lithuania broke a record of generated power from nuclear fusion
  • EU is a member of project ITER to expand use of fusion energy
