Team-Based Problem Solving

  • Determine concepts and skills students need to master, including to what degree those concepts and skills need to be mastered for particular standards, courses, and grade levels;
  • Identify a variety of strategies and representations;
  • Describe the background knowledge students should come with from previous courses or grade levels;
  • Understand how standards connect to other standards within the same course or grade level;
  • Recognize how current standards prepare students to access content in future instruction.

Shared Meeting Notes: tinyurl.com/SSECCNotes18-9

10 of 108

Team-Based Problem Solving

  • Standard 5.OA.3 Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule "add 3" and the starting number 0, and given the rule "add 6" and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences, and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the corresponding terms in the other sequence. Explain informally why this is so.

    • 5.NBT.1, 5.NBT.2 (understand the place value system)
    • 5.G.1 (compose and understand the coordinate plane); 5.G.2 graph points in first quadrant of coordinate plane
  • Multiple tasks to achieve mastery of each standard

Data-based Decision Making

  • The purpose of Data-based Decision Making is to assess student progress towards learning core standards.
  • Data collection and analysis occurs continuously and over time in all three tiers of instruction.
  • Data-based Decision Making informs potential adjustments needed in Tier 1 instruction and guides selection of supplemental material to be used in Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction.

Shared Meeting Notes: tinyurl.com/SSECCNotes18-9

25 of 108

Data-based Decision Making

  • Students are provided Multiple Opportunities during Tier 1 instruction to learn and demonstrate understanding of grade-level content.
  • Each Data-based Decision making cycle aligns with a big idea that focuses on selected standards.
  • Throughout the unit, a variety of aligned formative assessments are used to inform students and teachers of learning progressions and needs.

  • How was it using an essential tracker to look at student work?
  • How will looking at this kind of data inform your teaching?
  • If these were your students, how would you move forward?
    • Addressing the missing skills that some students may have?
    • Going deeper for students who demonstrated a consistent understanding of the skill?

  • CCC Prompts Primer Document

The CCSSO’s State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards in Science (Science SCASS) released a Primer Document in May 2018 focusing on helping teachers better use the Crosscutting Concepts to prompt student responses.

  • “When teachers’ prompts are structured with the crosscutting concepts, the focus of the students thinking can be directed to key aspects of the phenomenon, the systems being investigated, and/or patterns that may be used as evidence to support explanations or arguments for the causes of a phenomenon.”
