DEFINITION OF VIRTUAL EXCHANGE

VE is the “engagement of groups of learners in extended periods of online intercultural interaction and collaboration with partners from other cultural contexts or geographical locations as an integrated part of their educational programmes and under the guidance of educators and/or expert facilitators” (O’Dowd, 2018, p. 5)

BENEFITS FOR DIVERSITY, INCLUSION, AND EQUITY

-VE is inclusive with students who cannot afford studying abroad, cannot physically go, or have families.

-This experience increases students’ motivation to study abroad and to travel (Hilliker, 2020; Ryan, 2020), which can translate into finding opportunities for internships and work abroad.

-This experience increases students’ confidence when speaking the target language (Hřebačková, 2019; O’Dowd, 2021; Stevens Initiative, n.d.), which is a known issue with heritage students.

-This experience opens the door to countries outside Europe and not typical travel destinations (D’Agostino, 2022).

    • “…are learning, teaching and research materials in any format and medium that reside in the public domain or are under copyright that have been released under an open license, that permit no-cost access, re-use, re-purpose, adaptation and redistribution by others.” UNESCO
  • Benefits for diversity and inclusion
