Futures wheel Further instructions

40min

At the end of each tier, check if all important aspects have been addressed.

You should check, at least, if both negative and positive impacts have been thought of for each node on the previous step.

For a more all-around consideration of impacts, You can create a checklist using project related aspects or by use Design Value Framework below

  • Planet (environmental impacts)
  • Democracy (political impacts)
  • Social (socio-cultural impacts)
  • Financial (financial impacts)

A balance should be sought between the easy flow of a short list and the pervasiveness of a long list.

These aspects cannot be used as sectors in the Futures wheel, but they have to be used eg. as printed cards instead.

Writing impact statements

Choose the positive and negative impacts you feel most important and significant in the context of the pilot from the future wheels created.

Write each statement as a separate post on padlet or some other digital tool. You should categorize the impacts by the actions and outputs they were created by. If several actions or outputs affect the same impact, you may repeat it under each. If possible, alter the viewpoint or the impact for each action or output.

Suggested structure for the statements:

By ______________ with ___________________ will _______.

(action or output) (stakeholder or means) (impact)

Evaluating, assessing, monitoring…

Nowadays, it seems impossible to implement a project without thinking, in the earlier stages, of a final assessment. This seemingly mandatory step can seem simple at first glance : « just make a questionnaire! » Yes, of course, but it is not that easy.

In the context of Future DiverCities, a team of researchers from the University of Savonia (Finland) has been developing an impact assessment protocol, based on scientific research as well as field tests to make sure that the method is adaptable and replicable in different contexts.

The method serves as a comprehensive framework for evaluating the past and potential future impacts of a project; whether they are positive or adverse. Consequently the exercise can be done at various stages of project implementation with all stakeholders involved; in our specific case project managers, artists, participating citizens, etc.
