“What must I do to earn eternal life?
Can life have value in this world of strife?”
Even when living by the moral law,
He heard a challenge; - there was something more.
“Sell all you have and in true charity
Give to the poor; then come and follow me;
You will have riches far beyond compare.”
At this the rich man sank into despair.
Like the disciples we may be perplexed;
Are we the rich one pictured in the text?
Jesus kept pointing us to equity;
Would not endorse desire for luxury.
Let us beware of forces that suggest
Sharing our wealth is just a useless quest;
Godly persuasion prompts our love to flow;
May we have courage letting it be so.
