AGRISCIENCE COURSE NOTEBOOK #purpose

Each student will be issued a course notebook. Replacements are available for an additional fee. This learning strategy is called “Interactive Notebooks”. Proper management of your notebook is essential for your success. Keeping an accurate Table to Contents, adding inserts, use of colors, highlighters, and annotating is helpful. A “perk” for having good notes and proper organization allows for easy use during allotted time on assessments.

OPEN WORK TIME

FLEX A & LUNCH B

#Earth Day #National Jelly Bean Day

The documentation outline will need to be revised to include practices highlighted and/or added in Exercise #1. Students may want to consider training programs that will help managers and employees fully understand the concepts of biological control. This will help to avoid day-to-day mistakes.

Not all growers want or should try to use biological controls. An integrated pest management (IPM) approach, for example, can include the use of pesticides as well as meeting health, safety and environmental objectives. Students could draw on the disadvantages of biological controls listed in the lesson reference as a starting point for their discussion. Their conclusion, however, should be based on weighing the cost against the value placed on the benefits gained.

Some key disadvantages students might list:

  • Management will be more difficult and time-consuming.
  • Control is not as quick and often not as effective as using pesticides.
  • More training is needed for managers and employees.
  • The potential for employee mistakes is more likely to give negative results.
  • Plants that carry a few pests or predator insects may cause consumer resistance and thus reduce their market value.
  • Added costs, including increased labor costs and management requirements, plus the cost of beneficials, may not be justified in terms of the benefits gained.

  • Scouting for early detection of pests, how and when
  • Working with beneficial suppliers to plan releases
  • Releasing beneficials as soon as pests are detected
  • Timing release to match pest life cycle, how to determine when
  • Using nonresidual insecticides before release
  • Using "pest-specific" parasites, how to determine which to use
  • Limiting pesticide use to encourage beneficial populations
  • Inspecting beneficial shipments when they arrive
  • Following supplier instructions on release and use of beneficials
