Introduction

In this lesson, you will explore different pathways you could take after college. You will analyze these options to determine which ones seem most appealing to you. You'll also look at how others have made similar choices and discuss their decisions with your classmates. Then, you'll reflect on your own strengths, interests, and values to see if they point you toward specific careers. Finally, you will research one of these careers to understand the pathway required to secure that job.

THINK ABOUT LIFE BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL

As you move through high school, the question of “What do I do next?” will inevitably come up in conversations with friends and family. While many people will have different opinions about which path is best, the decision ultimately lies with you.

- Do you want further education? If so, where?

- Are you interested in military service? If so, which branch?

- Do you want to take a gap year? If so, what will you do with it?

- Do you want to get a job? If so, what kind?

THINK ABOUT LIFE BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL

On this path, you choose a field of study—such as medicine, law, business, education, mathematics, science, etc.—and then take courses that lead to careers in that field. This may be a good choice for you if:

    • You enjoy learning and are motivated to succeed in academics.
    • You can finance college through your own means, scholarships/grants, or student loans.
    • Your desired career path requires a 4-year college degree.
    • You feel comfortable in a large social setting.

This may be a good choice for you if:

- You are unsure of which career field you want to pursue

- You need to save more money
