Officially created in Belgium in 2022 (unofficially operating since 2018), WIA (Women In Art) is a NGO (non-governmental organization) whose mission is to promote and support the work of women artists in Belgium and around the world.
�Women In Art wishes to promote the values and cultural diversity of women artists to the general public but also to artistic and cultural institutions. WIA wishes to offer events that are accessible to the greatest number of people, both in terms of pricing policy and accessibility to cultural events. In addition, WIA wishes to open the debate on the place and role of women artists of yesterday and today, whether on their contributions to the History of Art or to contemporary art.
The initiative goes beyond the production of a major event, the Biennale of Women In Art, but also through series of smaller events all year round (exhibitions, panels, networking, etc.), because Women In Art also wants to be a creator and bearer of sustainable solutions for the promotion of women artists through the creation of communities of professionals in the artistic, cultural and educational sectors.

The Biennale of Women In Art 'A Show of Resistance' is a collaborative art event praising women’s talents. The event will demonstrate that women artists, despite the remaining gender inequalities in the art world, stand strong, pursue their art and resist.
The Biennale of Women In Art 'A show of Resistance' will serve as a groundbreaking platform for women artists to display their artistic brilliance across a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, and video art. By bringing together an eclectic group of 24 talented women artists from Belgium (and/or living in Belgium), the biennale seeks to celebrate women artists, enrich our souls with stirring artworks, and inspire future generations of (female) artists.
The Biennale's rich program will not only feature captivating artworks and art performances but also thought-provoking panel discussions and debates, participatory conferences, collaborative workshops, and quality documentation. This celebration of women artists promises to be an unforgettable event that challenges conventions, ignites conversations, and amplifies the voices of women in the arts.

For the Zero Edition of the Biennale of Women In Art, WIA received over 200 incredible applications from amazing women artists. Athough we praise all women artists, WIA had the hard task of selecting only 24 women artists for its 2024 Zero Edition. One condition: all selected artists (based on an expert committee and a citizen committee) had to be working and/or living in Belgium (we plan to remove this limitation in our future international editions but this was a condition for our Zero Edition happening in Brussels, Belgium).
After many discussions and debates within the 2 committees (especially due to the very high quality of applications), we reached an aggreement and are very proud to present, for our Zero Edition of the Biennale of Women In Art, the following 24 women artists:

The Biennale of Women In Art 'A Show of Resistance' is a zero edition, meaning that it is a prototype edition. This prototype will act as a Proof Of Concept (POC) which will allow the association to see if women artists respond to the call (for that we know they massively did), if the general public shows up to the event and demonstrates interest for the artists and the mission of WIA (fighting for greater gender equality in the art sector), if art sector professionals are sensitive to the artworks and the mission, and finally if the event itself is feasible, reachable, doable despite the limited human and financial resources of an association. We will evaluate the results and analyse the outcomes of this zero edition in order to design and plan our future potential first edition. Besides the test dimension of the zero edition, the association also wants to verify whether a non-conformist approach of an open and collaborative biennale is also meaningful and relevant or not (as opposed to a more top-down centralized governance and event organization).

The Biennale of Women in Art will open on the 18th of March, 2024 at 14:00 and will run until the 31st of March, 2024. The venue is the Vanderborght space, centrally located in Brussels: Rue de l’Ecuyer, 50, 1000 Brussels, Belgium.
Because we believe culture should have no barrier, the entrance to the Biennale (besides the opening and closing) is free (pay what you want). Every donation is will help sustain our NGO and activities for women artists. Opening event (on the 18th of March) and closing event (31st of March) are the only two moments with entrance fees (25€).
