Letters from our first letter writing session to improve conditions at the Aurora ICE Detention Facility, and to urge legislators to cut ties with GEO and end the private maintenance of this facility!
This picture was taken by my best friend, Lucy Gregory, when we went to publicize a letter weekend session in Old Town!
Here is our table where people could get envelopes, paper, stamps, and pens! Also candy. A lot of candy.
We hosted our letter-writing sessions at the Old Town Library, an AMAZING community resource!
The results? We don't know yet. No one, out of the five leaders we wrote to- Cory Gardner, Michael Bennett, Allison Hiltz, and Jason Crow- has written back yet. But that's okay, because we're not going to stop until something changes. This project is far from over; I learned that it takes a lot longer than six months to produce positive upheaval! I want to keep empowering our community, so we can recognize our extraordinary collective power and work together towards making our community better!

Something is wrong with Kai. He’s late to school with bags under his eyes. His parents never know where he is or what he’s doing. He has callouses on his fingers from his music and a twisted ankle he can’t explain.
Something is wrong with Alex. She’s class president for the Laurels and daughter of the bishop. But she’s driving around with Kali and there’s a rainbow patch on her backpack.

I unscrewed the drain cleaner. “Well, the sulfuric acid in the drain cleaner will mix with the hydrogen peroxide and create a substance known as piranha solution.” I opened the hair dye and held it up. “Hydrogen peroxide. Piranha solution is used in laboratories as a last measure technique for getting rid of biohazards. It will dissolve organic matter in a matter of seconds.” I reached into a Walmart bag and pulled out a nylon rope. I tied that around the bath plug. “So we can unplug the tub without sticking our arms in.”
“Smart.”
“Thanks. You ready?”
He picked up the drain cleaner. “Yeah. Let's do this.”
I love him.

Goal: Research the impact Poudre students have on the local environment in order to design and implement a plan to reduce waste the school produces.
Inquiry Question: How can a student's decisions impact the local environment?
Avery Hough, IB Class of 2022
After lots of research I decided the best way to increase PHS’ diversion rate is to make our recycling paper only beginning next year. Diversion rate is the percentage of our solid waste that is recycled. After next school year if we are seeing improvements we will begin to reintegrate certain materials into the system. However, our current recycling posters are incorrect so they will need to be changed regardless.
My main project focus was researching and gaining a better understanding of what recycling practices work the best and how I can integrate them into PHS.
Avery Hough, IB Class of 2022
These slips were handed out at a faculty meeting to begin spreading the information regarding our changing system. Much of this information will be on our new posters.

Inquiry Question: How can I instill change and meaningful solutions into my community?
Emma Puckett, IB Class of 2022
I first had to set up the compost bin with leaves, paper, some soil, and other organic matter. Then I added the worms that I got from someone who already had a functioning compost system.
All of the liquid from the bin soaks through to the bottom where it can be collected and used to water plants. It is very nutrient rich and just as good for plants as using compost. This is what I collected after a few months.
I simply added my food scraps weekly and let the worms turn it into nutrient rich compost!
Goal: I will research different types of composting and what the most effective configuration is for my needs and wants, so that I can design the best compost system, in order to produce quality soil and plants from the soil.

After five months of letting the worms process my family’s food scraps, I stopped feeding them for about a week and a half and I was able to harvest some compost from the bin. I let it dry out in the sun, and now I can use it to plant plants.

Inquiry Question: How can the altering of a personal behavior have an impact both on the individual and on a global level?

A lot of people think of vegan food as just greens; salads and veggies. But it’s so much more! It inspired me to cook differently, and try out new ingredients like almond flour and oat milk. It’s amazing how much you can make.
It also inspired me to try new restaurants around town. Both of these pictures are of food at the Gold Leaf Collective- an entirely vegan based restaurant in Old Town. I discovered that while some vegans prefer to stick to basic fruits, nuts, and vegetables, it’s much healthier and more fun to find a balance between health and enjoyment.

Inquiry Question: What inner and outer factors influence how we express ourselves artistically?
Anna Whitefields, IB Class of 2022
Growing up I also had a passion for music. Long road trips lead me to listening to hours and hours of all different types of genres. Rock, bluegrass, pop, reggae, just about anything you can think of. I noticed how the sounds of instruments can complement each other in any song. Frankly, I’ve been amazed by the talent in many musicians
since I could comprehend music. When I was 8 years old I was inspired enough to pick up a guitar and start playing and writing songs myself. For half of my life, I have spent my free time playing and writing sones. Music has always been a big part of my life. It’s something I enjoy doing. It’s a great coping mechanism for when I am stressed. It is always something I can depend on. So, for my personal project I decided to record and produce my songs. My goal is to get my music on generic music streaming apps so people can hear what I have to say. And with high hopes, maybe it will take me far.

I got to work with budgeting, buying my own parts to build the garden, and adjusting certain parameters to make sure that my plants were healthy and happy. Since COVID-19 made me unable to donate to the food bank, I dropped bags of lettuce for some of my classmates so that they could get some fresh veggies without leaving their houses.
