Operating Engineer-Heavy Equipment Operator

Operating Engineers cover a variety of job classifications in industries such as highway and building construction (sometimes called a hoisting and portable, descriptive of the type of equipment used) mining, logging, and utility

works such as water and sewer excavation.

The 4-year apprenticeship consists of 6000 hours of On the Job Learning (OJL), a minimum of 144 hours per year of related instruction and pass necessary equipment performance tests.

Operating Engineer-Heavy Equipment Technician

A heavy equipment service technician maintains, services, and repairs the equipment and machines used in all forms of construction, material production, material handling, railroads, landscaping and related industries.

On the Job Learning (OJL), a minimum of 144 hours per year of related instruction. These apprentices attend 2 weeks of class each winter and 1 weekend each month.

Operating Engineer-Construction and Building Inspector

Construction Material Inspectors are highly trained, certified and have the experience to provide testing and inspection services for a wide range of construction projects. Our inspectors are able to provide quantifiable results on the durability, strength and characteristics of materials used to build structural elements.

The 4-year apprenticeship consists of 6000 hours of On the Job Learning (OJL), a minimum of 144 hours per year of related instruction and obtain the many certifications needed in the testing industry.

Operating Engineer-Geothermal/Well Drilling Operator

Geothermal and well drilling operators focus on sustainable energy and local labor to help eliminate dependence on foreign resources.

On the Job Learning (OJL), a minimum of 144 hours per year of related instruction and the passing of certifications and equipment performance tests necessary throughout the industry.

Qualifications for Operating Engineers’ Apprenticeship

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and maintain for the duration of the apprenticeship training
  • May be required to undergo drug testing
  • Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be able to proficiently understand, speak and write in English
  • May be required to furnish evidence of physical fitness to perform the word of the trade
  • Must be a resident of a county in Local 150’s jurisdiction which includes Illinois, Indiana and Iowa

Registration fee: $25.00 non-refundable application fee payable by money order only, made payable to Operating Engineers’ Local 150 Apprenticeship Fund
